I'm looking at buying a boat with twin diesels, mine at the moment only has one. I fitted an alternator booster to mine and was wondering if it was worth taking off and keeping for the new boat with twins but I'm not sure how twins would be set up regards the batteries and charging systems. Can anyone give some examples of of how these could be wired? Does one engine charge the engine start batteries and the other charge the domestic ones?

the way my twin is wired is each engine charging it's own starting battery. the port engine also charges the domestic batt through a split diode unit. It works great for me.

My port engine charges the single engine start battery and the starboard engine charges the two domestic batteries. I suspect that there may be many variations on a theme but two points of charge is good in my book - if the engine start battery goes a bit flat (as it did when the port alternator went) I was able to 'jump start' from the fully charged doemstic batteries.
