"the thing for itself" minus the speaks for "loquitor" bit - about the only sensible sound out of his lips all programme

I missed the first 5mins so can't comment on whose idea/where/quality of life decision it was ie his or hers. But there seemed little/no thinking going on beforehand.

No market research
luxury boat - a Sealine when I would have thought most business would be Americans not sure they rate 45ft Sealine as luxury
nowhere to go - no bolt holes, no creeks, 230 miles of nothing on featured trip
little experience - 3 years afloat initially on a river

so fantastic a place gets one 1/2 day charter in 6 months and concludes that it is such a fantastic place orders a RIB gets trashed during delivery and he is already saying he is losing £200 pure profit - Hmmm why don't they "all" go out on his 45 ?

Anyway, it's been such a success that he now reckons with his vast (sic) experience he can con less wise people than himself to but at least 2 luxury boats a year off him - hmmmmm

Best of all and reflecting well on the Mexican Authorities, I thought, is that he is not allowed to drive it during a charter!

- he doesn't know if the engine is running
- he calls the sea glass-like - was OK when they were swimming but looked choppy on the other bits of the day and it was so good had to go back into the only shelter (home mooring) for lunch ie if it was a day charter go out home for lunch go out again PM - great!

OTOH he must be a complete w***er as a business man as he was calculating his profit on the (only) day but had seemed to have forgotten he now has to hire and pay for a captain any time he gets a customer.

Can any of our forumites who work in business advise whether this is typical of a British businessman? the competition must be a lot less than I thought

Questions -
(1) Who motivated the drive for 'quality of life'
(2) Who decided the venue
(3) Who chose the car (big big big big clue here)
(4) Who ended up happy
(5) Who ended up commuting 5000 miles, sleeping alone, away from kids......loooking to the future (again).

The programme was TV and sure the gentleman concerned came over in a particular way (but he never bullshitted his skill set at any point!).
I have seen many slip on the foredeck, fail to plan, run from one rope to the next and try and hold 12 tons against the wind, tide and inertia with a piece of 14mm rope (when taking a turn arounf the post would make it possible) - in fact I have probably done the same at some point in the past. He set out to achieve things - my point was what really drove him both in what he had patently achieved before setting out to Mexico and in that move.

Thought so! Res Ipsa was (is?) a Sealine S34 that lives in Christchurch (actually, a few berths away from us. I think that the S34 was given to the kids after the F42/5 arrived, cos I remember hearing the plan to ship the F42/5 abroad last year some time (or maybe the end of the previou season).

I thought it was a daft idea then...

<<Given to the kids>> Blimey! they were aged about 6 or 7 by the looks of it. Even I didn't think he was that much of a wally /forums/images/icons/smile.gif. Mind you, at a guess, he might be on his second family - in which case he obviously doesn't have the capacity to learn from his previous mistakes /forums/images/icons/wink.gif.

If you were to ask him about the programme, I suspect he would say (as they usually do) that he was stitched up by the TV people, who edited it to make him look ill-informed, ill-prepared and a bit of a wazzock. But why, oh why do people let themselves in for this kind of ritual humiliation? They must know, by now, that they will get pilloried on national TV, but still they do it.

What's the world coming to, mumble, mutter, groan.......................

I'll have to check with management, as my memory's not, errm, not... ...not something or other. But the first Res Ipsa was in Christchurch for years, so they weren't exactly novices, though I can't comment on how often they went out.

just spoke with management. She's no recollection of the boat or the conversation. But swears blind I told her about the TV prog in the last few weeks.

I need to go and sit in a dimly lit room with a drink until it all gets back to normal...

Dunno about you, but in the jhr household it's pretty much situation normal if SWMBO is claiming that I told her something that I know perfectly well I didn't tell her /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Don't wory, you're not hallucinating - there were two Res Ipsas in Christhcurch - I thought it odd at the time that two boats were sharing the same name. The other is still moored there (or was at the end of last year).

Just watched it on video, unbelievable!!

What on earth was that day out about with the two sailors, I would have felt so uncomfortable with them two pratts fussing around me, the sailors did not look all that relaxed with it!

They can not tie ropes and are constantly mopping up round the deck, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

And I am sorry, that was sooooo rigged! There is no way that they chartered that boat, that was all for the telly.

interesting rules and regs

8. We will endeavour to arrange embarkation times to accommodate your needs. However, should it become necessary we reserve the right to refer to the following times; Embarkation from 16.30hours on the first day of the charter and disembarkation by 10.00hours on the last day of the charter.

This means in my simple mind you pay for two days that you basically cannot use the boat! yeah rite!

Yes Phil.
He obviously knows how to earn a few bob & your right he can spend it how he likes. Its just a shame he came over as such a div. & surely if he's had boats
for 3 years he must have some practical knowledge. Perhaps he was nervous in front of the cameras. I mean he seemed to have a bad case of verbal diareha & kept running round like a headless chicken. Still unless someone who knows him makes a comment it will stay one of life's great mysteries. But one thing is for sure as other posters have said, Most of this exercise was to please blondie.
