TV to the laptop.

Win-TV does require a very high spec, although yours should be more than their quoted minimum. Thats why I went to the maplin version, cause the required spec was lower. works great on mine which is a lower spec than yours by quite a lot.

Re: Talbot - which aerial did you fit?

Wow! I bought this to use before I got the Triax UFO fitted:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&DOY=3m1&ModuleNo=29193&criteria=

Fairly crappy analogue pics, even hoisted up on a rope, so idnt think it would pick up Freeview.... but that was in Glasson Dock, which is a bit in the middle of nowhere... although pics were perfect with the masthead aerial.

Re: Talbot - which aerial did you fit?

So how do you rate the UFO?

BTW, I looked at the one you had and thought it was only going to last 5 minutes.

I bought the portable one so I could use it in the B&B when working away from home.

So far so good. excellent pics in Glasson Dock, 18m off St. Davids' Head, Falmouth, Bayona and Cascais.

In Lagos, I get excellent pics on 3 channels, reasonable pic on 1 channel, and crappy ghosted pic on 1 channel... I'm putting it down to the masts at present. Suppose I should test it going up the channel.

I've got a Hauppauge HVR 900 for the laptop so that I should be able to get digital freeview when Portugal enters the current century.

does the UFO have its own amplifier (i.e. do you need to provide power to the aerial or another stand alone amp) or do you use a seperate aerial amp.

Does it cope with both digital and analog signals?

It comes with the aerial which attaches at the masthead, and a box which is attached in my saloon. the box is powered 12V, the cable from the aerial plugs into the box, and it has 2 outputs, which I use as 1 for FM and 1 for TV.

I'm not sure whether the amp is up the mast, or in the powered box. A little red light comes on on the underside of the aerial when it is powered up, so there could be an amp up there. The power for the lamp must go up the aerial cable, because there is no power supply other than to the box in the saloon.

I have only used it for analogue, but Dogwatch says that he got his 30+ digital channels once it was mounted up the mast.

Cheers

only reason to have light at the top of the mast is to power something. Only thing to power is an amp, and top of the mast is the best place for it!

Re: Talbot - which aerial did you fit?

I have been really happy since fitting mine, I took a punt after asking about here and no one offering experience.

Has been up a year or so and still working fine, but no-one has been aloft since fitting so there is no knowing the condition after a year of sun/rain/wind etc. The plastic is not glossy like that on the Glomex units, I presume it is UV stable, but time will tell.

Triax is not a 2 bit company so I am sure they have a reputation to keep, though this dies seem to be their entry into the marine market. I have no connections.

The biggest advantage after the good picture, high gain is the small size, around half the size of the Glomex. The box on the wall is a splitter and amp but the aerial is also active, I am not sure how triax have split the power.

I so far will recommend this aerial, time will tell.

Re: Talbot - which aerial did you fit?

I've got the glomex currently mounted on a boathook! Gives a cracking picture.

Re: Talbot - which aerial did you fit?

Are you technically meant to have a separate TV licence if you are watching telly on your boat (of no fixed abode) on a lappy?

Jon.
