TV Over Internet - Any experiences

Chas,

If you are in Lagos I guess you subscribe to the marina wifi via Boingo for £12 or so per month.

I tried a few of these internet sites and, whilst they work, the bandwidth is limited, so the quality is crap, and you cant always get on.

Eventually, I got a Slingbox, plugged it into the internet at home in England, and watch UK TV this way. The Slingbox has its' own built in Freeview decoder, and you can also connect it to a SKY box and other stuff. There is a gizmo that you fit to the SKY box to enable you to change channels - its an IR transmitter.

Of course, this relies on you having somewhere in England to set up the Slingbox, and a broadband facility with unlimited uploads. We use Zen where we have a 2Gb download limit, (you can pay for more), but unlimited uploads.

If you want any more help with this, just let me know... either here or by PM.

I'd be slightly sceptical of PC2TV myself... But I didn't put much time into researching it.

If you are ok with content, but maybe not the greatest quality, and the link you're on is of reasonable speed, try out this list of sites that stream current TV shows:

http://tvteddy.blogspot.com/2007/10/tv-links-replacements.html

They will come at you as embedded DivX or Flash, so you may need to install the DivX codecs off of the web somewhere (Google it, it'll come up first go).

I'm all for HD quality and whatever, but really, for the sake of entertainment on a boring night in the marina, free low quality streams do me fine.

nick.

Sounds like it could be just up my street then /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

DON'T try free "Secret Satelite Software" at $49.95. Its a complete con. I got it because the BBC and ITV videos are restricted to UK and we are liveaboard in Sardinia. What they do is send out old recordings under the guise of new material. If you want to keep watching BBC Question Time from Truro for a month or more then this is the package for you! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Youtube does a lot of interesting news stuff plus entertainment.
