There was a recent thread re: obtaining TV on a laptop using a DVB-T USB stick obtainable from Maplins........

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1814474/an/0/page/24#1814474

Have purchased one and get reasonably good reception of numerous digital TV channels (+ radio) here in the UK.

Am I correct in assuming that to obtain english speaking news programmes (eg BBC World etc) in France, Spain, Italy etc I would need a satelite aerial? Would I also need some kind of freeview box??? Anyone with actual experience of using the above, or similar??

Thanks

The USB receiver (as do all other "freeview") type receivers simply receive TV signals from land based TV transmitters in the same way the tv in a house would work

To receive the stations you mention in France Spain etc you would need a satellite TV system with a satellite dish.

Now since the satellite dish needs to point constantly at an area of the sky accurate to a few degrees (in both elevation and azimuth) you have a immediate problem on a boat. Such systems do exist - but are seriously (and I mean SERIOUSLY) expensive with gyro stabilized dishes that won't fit on anything of "normal" yachting dimensions

If you want to watch freeview tv in France and do it whilst moored alongside get a caravan type sat reciever around £70 I used one last year down the canals to Paris setting up took 5 mins. In marinas like Dover the terrestrial tv signal is rubbish but satelite was ok, you may need a bigger dish in spain check the astra satelites "footprint". If you want satelite tv whilst you sail or swing at anchor then you will need an expensive tracking system.

If you have wifi then you could think about a slingbox watch your british tv anywhere in the world.

Ok friends of mine have wifi in greece they have family in the uk with sat tv and internet conection linked to a sling box which routes there tv chanels to the laptop in greece for the cost of the wifi conection. search slingbox on google for more info

Thx folks. Afraid I don't do Sat TV so probably why it sounded weird. So would this USB stick get me BBC on the boat?

PS. Correct - don't do ITV/C4/C5 either.

I used a Hauppauge Win TV Nova S (not T) through a satellite dish to get UK TV in France on a Laptop. Not a very successful device, very fiddly to align, presumably why they are no longer made. I have since reverted to a standard Sky digibox + UK card (naughty, I know) through an RF modulator plus Win TV stick . You do need a dish in France to get broadcast UK TV.
