TV in the Med - Sorry again!

So I have my VPN iPad streaming Wimbledon via the Spanish marina wifi. (A miracle in itself?)
Although my Raspberry Pi linked to my TV will stream from my "Three" mifi it's not good and too expensive.
My marina wifi seems to allow my iPad (with my private network) to "change" the IP address but it won't let my VPN'ed Raspberry Pi through.
Hoping you're with me so far as I'm probably using the wrong discriptive words.
So to my point.
Can I use an Apple TV to push my iPad's streams and downloads to my non smart TV. I know both devices have to be connected to the same router. Could this be the Spanish marina router or my mifi (would that cost me?)

Filmon.com was perfect until this year when they started charging for it ... now I just watch French TV when on the boat. I get everything at home with a 9 foot dish but it would look silly on the radar arch although you'd get an extra couple on knots downwind! ... :cool:

FilmOn would have solved my problem I think.
We have a dish on the pontoon so watch German football and maybe Wimbledon if the Germans are doing well.

Or even £15 a month for a few months, in order to avoid rushing into something that may be expensive, and may not work.

On holiday in Spain for a week, a couple of months ago, we paid the £15 so we could watch UK TV in those moments when trying to fill some time. Mojacar wasnt the most exciting place in the world in Late April :(
 
Have you tried the ToView app? Free to download and I am having been playing with it in the UK and using tunnel bear to pop up in France, Spain and Italy and it still allows me to watch about 75% of the UK freeview channels.

No idea how it works, but I will try it in France on Friday when we are next down.
 
I maybe teaching grandma to suck eggs but does everyone know that French tv does broadcast in English. Usually after 9pm, a lot of dubbed films and tv programs can be switched to their original language ie mostly English. On a good night i can watch upto 4 different channels in English/American on a bad night just one, (had to pause then because a Monte Carlo 80 just glided past into her mooring). Its never the latest or greatest but it is free

We then cast it to the TV via Chromecast. We are with orange for broadband but are only getting download speeds of around 3mps. There is a bit of buffering sometimes which is annoying.
Is your spanish mobile still working? The one with the last 4 digits of 5510?

I'm using my-private-network.com which has a nice app for the iPad. A few clicks and I was away.
They also provide detailed instructions for the Pi using Libreelec and the add-on Open VPN. They explain how to do a bit of recoding and that should have been it, so maybe there is more development to be done.

Because I'm on the edge of broadband speed, I don't think FilmOn streaming will work that well so my intention is to download from iplayer and later push it to the TV.

You can certainly use Apple TV to stream from your device, as long as you are on the same network. It will not matter of you are using fake DNS on your device and not the Apple TV but you will find that bandwidth and signal strength from the Marina Wi-Fi will cause buffering - at least that’s our experience. Whether or not you are able to stream iPlayer or ITV player/4od et al will depend on their current proprietary build. You will often find it blocked for mirroring or streaming so don’t take it as a given that it will work. Sky and Now TV are also locking that currently. If your iPad will stream bbc then don’t update the app!

I know that Film on are charging but for the cost of a packet of gum per day for a year it’s probably worth it. You will find it successful in SD with even a 2mbs speed and you can also ‘record’ shows so you have the best of both worlds...

FWIW our IPTV solution is:
SmartDNS - (excellent) - then:

Apple TV for iPlayer and Netflix and Now TV
Film on for Terrestial, (non bbc)
PlayStation for Amazon Prime

Oh and of course we are in Portugal so we get unlimited 3G from nos for around €25 pcm - I know it’s trickier in the Med...

It sounds like we watch a lot of TV!! I promise we don’t but we do like to watch about an hour each night and I hate not being able to get something!
 
If you have got a proper VPN, whats wrong with just watching BBC iPlayer.
It isn't a DNS or an iPlayer thing.
If you can make your connection to the BBC servers look like you are in the UK - it will work.
I do this by using a private VPN and "tunnel" back into Devon - this works.

Sounds good but "Can be switched" ?? ... how d'you do that then? ... please.

I bought my TV in the U.K but because of space constraint the max size for me is 20". The problem is no one does a smart 20" TV. I think I could push pre downloaded stuff from my VPN'ed IPad directly to a smart tv especially if it was Samsung.
Hence why I'm looking at an Apple TV solution.
Just realised you question was for Crosssy but this still may be of interest.

This has made me think that somewhere I have my Pi/Libreelec/OpenVPN not correctly setup

Sorry, I can't really help with that particular setup.
I use OpenElec builds for my RPis.
I guess that there is a Kodi addon that will connect with one of these proxy style VPN services - probably using OpenVPN.
My system essentially consists of two routers with the Open Source DD-WRT software/firmware installed.
You can pick these routers up for about £35 each
Using OpenVPN, the two routers create a secure (SSL - https) tunnel.
The end solution is that all my devices on the boat in Spain "think" that they are on the home LAN.
The home router is downstream of the main home internet router thus creating a great firewall solution.
Devices like my Raspberry Pis then route through the home connection as though they were actually located in the UK.
It takes quite a lot of setting up (creating security certificated and keys etc) but it is well worthwhile in the end.

But back to the point, if you get the VPN bit correct, iPlayer MUST work.
