Hi folks,
I am looking into fitting a TV Antenna for the first time on our sailing cruiser. (Moody 346).

Has anyone tried and had any luck with the stub type TV Antenna's? (link below)
Banten Stub TV Antenna | Force 4 Chandlery

I am interested in this as it would be much easier to mount on the masthead without obscuring the nav/anchor lights - especially compared to the larger "flying saucer" type.

Any views also on how far the TV antenna needs to be away from the VHF antenna or is that not an issue?

The other option would be to mount on the aft rail, (much simpler) but as with any antenna - higher is usually better.

Any info much appreciated.

Thanks

Robert

Unfortunately 'it depends'.
If you have a clear line of sight to the transmitter, and it's fairly local, any bit of wire will be fine.
IF you are at the edge of coverage with awkward stuff in the way, you need a proper aerial, the more directional the better.
In between, try it and see!
I'd suggest a metre vertical separation from the VHF would be good, you may or may not get away with much less, you may not care if the picture freezes when you're transmitting anyway. 25W of VHF could possibly damage the TV if you got the aerials well coupled but I'd say you'd be unlucky. You might get some technically interesting minor interactions.

We have had the Banten 335 at the masthead for about 8 years, works fine. Its below the VHF, but I cannot recall ever transmitting on VHF while the TV is on :-) More of an issue and only discovered a few years ago is that the LED anchor light causes some interference (it is a low emission type from Boatlights) , so sometimes we switch it off and then back on at bunk time, when the TV goes off anyway.

Get a Glomex flying saucer and mount it on the pushpit. You don't need to put it up the top of the mast.

I'll be removing my Glomex saucer shortly and replacing it with a QuSpot and Rut240 so I can watch streaming services. I've not used the antenna at home for about 5 years, let alone at the boat ?
