Turn your iPhone into a satellite communicator!?

Just read about this device that is being showcased at the CES show in Vegas this week. Would be good if YM could review its possible applications for the marine industry.

Basically it connects to an iPhone via bluetooth. From the website I don't think it turns it into a satphone as such, but you can 'send messages and GPS position'...

The service provider might have something to say about this!!!!!!

"This device has not been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained." [Sec. 2.802(c)]

Well, it's still pre-release from what I gather, and that's normal. From what I understand the iPhone and iPad were only approved weeks before their release dates. (That's how some of the pre-release information got out).

Sadly, Apple limit the the bluetooth connectivity of the iphone to more or less just bluetooth headsets. Unless you jailbreak the phone, and that voids your warranty

So when it reads smart phones, I doubt it would include iPhones :(

Alas, you may be correct there. I read this link on an Apple related forum talking about the CES show. If you download the product brochure it does say Android devices.

Still might be a viable option for many though?

It's easy to jailbreak and then restore the original OS if you need to. I understand that Apple can't tell that it's been jailbroken. I've done both the boys iPod Touches several times without doing them any harm.
