Turkish Question

Since some Turkish sailors write on this forum, I hope I can get some help. I am trying to get ownership and registration documents for a yacht allegedly built in 1997 in Tuzla, Istanbul, and apparently brought 2 years ago to Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico, in search of a North American buyer. The Hungarian owners refuse to come up with documentation on the boat's history, which I believe is essential to ensure that the boat has no legal claims against it and so that I can register it with the U.S. Coast Guard.

I am unable to get an answer to phone calls to the Gambian ministry where the boat is allegedly registered; the consulate in Budapest gave the boat Gambian documentation, but I cannot determine whether the full ownership and registration history were submitted. I fear not.
I need to contact Turkish boat registration officials to determine its registration history. Can anyone tell me who to contact? I want this boat, but I don't want it if it's saddled with a lot of baggage.

So it's a Turkish boat, located in Mexico, owned by Hungarians, registered in The Gambia, and the owners refuse to provide any documentation? I can hear the alarm bells ringing from here...

I don't think the Turkish authorities would be able to help you much anyway, once the boat left Turkey and the Turkish register they'd almost certainly loose all interest in her. I doubt you will ever be able to prove that the current owners have good title to her and if they won't give you any documentation one wonders whether they do? Sorry.

Was in Yalikivak last Tuesday. A significant number of yachts and motor boats were US flagged, often registered in Delaware. As these were clearly not US manned, we wondered if it was some sort of tax thing.

Can anyone help with the answer??

Ta.

Lots of US groups have Delaware HQs for tax reasons.

Same thing for large British flagged yachts. These are owned by UK offshore companies whose activity is not taxable. Only remittances to the UK are taxed but you don't need to be British to create this type of company.

A few years ago the Government gave a discount for registering as a Turkish flagged boat but i believe that there few takers and it was quietly shelved .

On one occasion last year when we returned to Yat Marine we found ourselves put next to a Delaware registered US flagged boat and the owners, who were on board, were from Russia . Was this the vision that Joe Stalin had ? ;)

I've often wondered whether the US masses know about this practice? Revering the flag as they do I'd have though they would be horrified to see it being used as a cheap "flag of convenience"?

agree, we have seen and entertained many USA flagged owners, none of which are American - mostly Greek in our experience but many other nationalities as well - except American.
