i have 2 Chrysler Nissan Patrol 6 cylinder diesel engines driving my 32 ft RLM sterndrive. The engines are in good condition. With the coming fuel increase, i am thinking of adding turbos to the engines to increase efficiency and cut emissions. The engines are circa 1980 - any thoughts please, for or against?

They won't increase efficiency at all, just stuff more air in. If you then had the diesel pumps uprated to cope with the additional air, you could burn some more fuel and get a bit more power. The only way to get more efficiency and lower emissions would be to go to electronically controlled common rail diesels.

Agree with Wiggo. Its just not worth the expence and hassle of retro fitting turbos to a 30 year old pair of engines and they might just bring an abrupt and premature end to your power plants. No mention of where you use the boat but if you are using it up river then def. not worth the trouble.
Ps.Doubt your outdrives will thank you much either if early versions such as the 250etc.

More power equals more fuel. Simple as that.
If you add turbo's to your existing engines, forgetting the cost of installation, risk to the internals and hassle of getting them running well etc etc, you will simply use more fuel which is probably not the desired effect.

Definitely not worth the hassle IMO

regards,

Nick

Turbo engines frequently have different pistons, oilways, heads, injection pumps etc. than their n/a counterparts, so turboing them would require a rebuild with all these bits. Be more cost effective to simply re-engine with a more modern pair of engines from lancing marine, volvo, beta etc.

Of course the easiest way to cut fuel and emissions is just to slow down and resist going at full power except when you need to.

Oh dear....Boy racer....:)

'm afraid it is more complicated than that which in any case might make emissions worse.

A turbo isn t added to improve emissions,it is added in order to obtain more power from the engine. More power means more fuel burnt, more fuel burnt means more emissions and bigger carbon footprint and fuel bill!!!!!!!!

You need to pick up the habits of a modern day boy racer. Fit a constant pressure injection system and ECU /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I suspect it would be easier and cheaper in the long run to just re engine with a modern diesel that meets current rules

Try adding a "Turbo" sticker onto each quarter, much easier than adding real ones and better carbon footprint too. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
