Fingers crossed vp gets it fitted without any issues tomorrow so we are able to get on the water at long last.

Beautiful!
I took a load of pictures of my K26 when it came back from rebuild recently, they're certainly very impressive lumps of engineering. Especially when they're shiny and (mostly) new.
Best of luck with getting back on the wet stuff

£415+vat

I found a new one in the end for £1550inc vat

Having got the unit back I'm pleased I went for rebuild.

Indeed, couldn't agree more.

Sometimes rebuild is not possible so you had that luck after all. A bit surprised about the £1550 - would have guessed 'only' twice the cost of rebuild.

James,

Bit surprised that you were surprised regarding returned condition if you know what I mean, turbo looked exactly as I would expect.

Most important bit is the failure analysis what did Turbo Dynamics quote as failure mode in order that you can put plan in place to prevent re-occurrence of the issue, turbochargers do not simply fail without a specific cause.

Where did the quote for a new unit come from? I have had Yanmar distributor quotes of significantly more than £1,500 for the same application in the past.

As for Ben suspect his boat has been out of the water too long......Floor, it was clearly on the deck!

Hi LS

OK, to answer from the top

Condition - Ok I would have been slightly disappointed if returned not "as new", but just because its what you expect does not make it any less pleasing ...(if you see my twisted logic...)

Failure they put down as corrosion, even in the waste-gate which was not able to close fully? I asked what preventative action I could take to prevent in future and their answer was none at all..

quote for new unit from a company I found through their IHI turbo listings on eBay, they seemed to list hundreds of turbo's, in fact apparently they have 1.5m items listed on eBay, qualityparts.co.uk they say it is a genuine IHI part, not a Chinese copy... Indeed VP got a quote for over £2k

...as for Ben. I think its sawdust poisoning.

edited bit - website for quality parts seems to be lacking in any stock, see here instead, this is their eBay store. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Quality-Part-Solutions-Ltd

I would suggest that VP takes a long hard look at your exhaust system, if it drains totally the old wheeze of a wooden bung wrapped is calico up the exhaust pipe stops a lot of corrosion during idle months.

Very reason I asked where Circa £1,500 price comes from was exactly what VP found 'normal' pricing for this unit is nearer £2,500.

I obtained two quotes from two south coast Yanmar dealers , within £200 of each other but no stock at barrus .

Looks like this rebuild was just bearings and a clean up as there was a bag of bits , the only important parts there were bearings and slip rings . No old shaft or rotors.

We have a halyard exhaust system, in previous years I have always stuck a rag up the exhaust. This year I forgot… backing the prevailing south easterly winds and the strong winds we have had this year made me wonder if that could have been the cause?

Little update, in Yarmouth. Seabird performed faultlessly. Berthed next to a friend with a lochin 33 who informed me that over the winter he had both his turbos refurbed by turbo dynamics, also had to have a new gearbox and new gearbox oil coolers on both boxes.. I'm feeling more fortunate now.

Glad to hear that firefly turbo is working ok. Those rebuilt turbos do look the dogs b******* don't they.!

Not sure how long my diy decoke will last on mine, might have to get a rebuild done on mine as well.
