Planning my Med cruise for this year and considering stopping off in Africa rather than Europe. Strikes me Monastir or similar would be a good place to overwinter but I don't hear much about it on these forums (perhaps I missed it)
Any opinions out there?

I have friends who over-wintered in Monastir a few years back. Here are a few extracts from what they wrote to me about it:

It is right under the flight-path of the airport, though luckily this is some miles away or it would be even noisier. Full by end of October in Year 2000.

In total we paid less than £450 for 6 months over-wintering on board in the water, which is our cheapest ever! (11.4m).

The showers are still due for renovation. Laundry in the marina complex, next to the Exchange. In town there are proper banks with cash-dispensing machines.

Tunis Airport takes two hours by Taxi. There are no direct flights from Monastir to England but you can book Monastir/London changing at Rome. Alternatively, from Tunis direct to London.

There are good markets but not supermarkets. You can't buy a fraction of the things you can in Spain or France, or even Greece. Alcohol is available on the shelves in all the supermarkets.

Thanks to Colin & David for input. My thoughts were that Spain is overcrowded, France and Italy expensive. Won't make Athens in one year if I stop to smell the roses on the way, but could well make Tunisia where the weather is better and it's cheaper. Might stay with the boat or haul out and come home, either way I could be sailing out of Tunisia earlier in the new year to give maximum time for Turkey (Malta on the way?) and then bunk off down to Cyprus next winter.... Any general comments?

Malta makes an excellent place to over-winter. Have a look at my website (link below) and you will find lots of information about staying there.

Good luck.

Hey!
Congratulations on an excellent and very useful website!
I shall sit and read with interest all the stuff included there.....
I am really getting good value out of all you Guys and Gals out there through this forum and look forward to buying you all a drink at some time in the future to pay you back. Pilot books and other publications are of course very useful but nothing like the up to date info supplied by people with up to date experience.
Thanks
Mike

port el kanntoui ?? seems to have a good reputation.

Yes El Kantaoui is a nice place to spend the winter.. EXCEPT it ist far away from the closest city SOUSSE (about 15 km..) you need to take a bus or a taxi each time you want to see something else than the marina and the small and expensive "supermarket"
I will say, it is nice if you are not living aboard...

Re: Monastir

I spent several winters in Monastir a few years back.. (3 years)
No the marina is not "right under the flight-path of the airport", although it is possible to see the planes preparing to land.. but it is absolutely not a problem..
Yes, you have to make reservation in advance, as usually the marina is full for the winter.. you can now pay by credit card (Visa) Price is cheap in comparison to European standard and the cost of living is also very cheap..
As always "showers are still due for renovation".. There is a laundry in the marina and seveal others in town wich is only a short walk away. The vegetable, meat and fish market is in the center of the town with a good and cheap choice of fishs.. and there is a supermarché Monoprix next to the market.. and a "magasin General" in town.. Also several Cyber Café in town.. (Publinet)
There is usualy a very good social life between boats which will spend the winter there, a very good safety and no problem from religion or integrism..
I will recommend it to spend the winter months

This is also "The" place to buy your new "Spade" anchor as you can have it free of taxes and shipping costs from Tunis.

We have been in portimoa Portugal for a while with loads of people holed up there. Moved into the Med at Christmas and have found spaces in marinas at reasonable rates but not wanting you to stay too long eg over a month.
Anyway we are heading for <Greece, Croatia but we are thinking about Tunis next winter, sound quite good.

Let us know what you find.
