My back stay resonates like a cello string when at anchor in a breeze. I've shut up the buzzing shackles on the end of the boom but can't stop the buzzing that fills the boat. Anyone found a cure?

That's a new one on me. My only suggestion is to loop a long line round it, with both ends led from the front of the boat; then wriggle it up to about half way up, then put some tension on it. Only do this in harbour of course.

Sure its the back stay ?

My topping lift sings in a breeze but slacking it slightly stops it

Have you got in-mast reefing?

Our In-mast howls like a banshee when the wind hits it from certain angles.

Mine has done the same very occasionally, but being a tweakable backstay on a fractional rig, it's easy to adjust the tension so that the sound goes away.

If yours isn't easily adjustable, maybe a line spiralled around it would disrupt the aerodynamics like they do on tall thin radio masts? Perhaps try passing the main halyard round it a few times to form the spiral.

The towel / cloth and weight above mentioned, are the answer. Preventing resonance is mostly a matter of dampening. If it fails, move the cloth / weight a metre or so higher. Reason fot this is that if you happen to tie them to a null point by chance, then it won't work. There is likely to be a standing wave form on the length, and that has peaks of amplitude and nulls. You might even be able to see this, and if so, tie to the point of greatest movement.
