I'm afraid I've been rather let down (no names) and am looking for a suitably qualified and experienced tutor to do an RYA powerboat day skipper course on my boat in the week beginning 30th May. My boat is in Brighton, but I want to cover the Solent area if possible. Can anyone help or am I too late?

I'm assuming you are looking to gain the RYA Dayskipper practical certificate. Just be aware that simply getting an instructor to take you thru the course does not mean youu will be awarded the certificate. There is nothing against you getting an instructor to do what is termed own boat tuition, but the issue of the RYA certificate must be made thru an RYA recognised Seaschool.

And also, just because you have a certificate, means absolutley nothing about your compitance!!

Nice comment at least he is taking the steps to get tuition which is more than the majority of people do.

Although they are not near you try North Sea Yachting (www.northseayachting.com), Ian Parks.. he offers own boat tuition, he runs and RYA training centre and a jooly good bloke.

I am sure he is around then as I was trying to meet up with him whilst taking my 5 year old son to lords to watch the cricket.

Good luck and safe boating..

Oh Haydn why are you always so down on training? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif just cos your a salty old self taught sea dog. The guy wants to train to feel more confident and safe to enjoy his boating.

What if everybody who bought a boat did no training? doesnt bare thinking about.
Yesterday for example we were starting a DSP for four people, the new owners of our ex school boat the Fairline 50. All four had been on a world cruise on the QE2 but none of these people had any experience at all.

The instructor planned to take them out for some helming practice and was justifiaby concerned that given the brisk westerly on his starboard side (stern to mooring) and no vessel to "fender off" on the port side, when coming back in he needed an experienced person to act quickly with the morring warps etc and asked me to assist.

All four conceded naturally that they would not have been able to handle the berthing procedure in those conditions without training.

Then I sat with the owner of a Sessa 35 (stern drives) who had just finished his second day of a 4 day DSP with our other instructor. He said to me he was now already much happier and safer with bringing her in stern two in a brisk wind due to just the two days training and was eager to show his wife his new skills.

So training is important and does improve competance and thus saftey. It is folly to suggest otherwise.

Not against training at all. I've seen stupid folk without training and stupid folks with training. Also a YM who could not park, ran aground five times and tried to ram me whilse I towed him off!! Maybe training just atracts the idiots!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
