I have just acquired a boat with a pair of tufnol winches - make unknown but fairly common types that have a handle in a slot at the bottom. Except mine don't have a handle between them. You can't get the spares for anything these days - they can't be more than 30 years old! So I'm a bit stuck.

I think what I'm looking for is probably a flat bar about 1 and a half inches wide or so with some sort of slot or cut-out at the end to go round the pillar of the winch and somehow lock into the slot.

Searched the Beaulieu Boat Jumble high and low in vain.

Has anyone got one of these handles they could give rough dimensions of? So I could have a stab at making them? Or can anyone suggest where I might get a handle like this?

there must be someone walking around with a lot of these things cos ours hasnt got one either,(its a laurence one) is there another site where we can get one,why anyone wants to take the handle when they sell a boat is beyond me unless there is an unknown use that hasnt been let on...

They are quite easy to make

if you have an angle grinder and a drill. Buy some st st bar the size of the slot, or the next available size up and grind the winch end to the slot size. Drill a hole, clearance diameter to fit the winch shaft, centred about 1" from the end. Using a cutting disc in your angle grinder, cut in from the end to open up to the hole you drilled. Go over the whole thing with a polishing disc in your angle grinder. It doesn't have to have a handle on the hand end.

Hi Bob
I have these fitted on my boat, if you wish I could draw around the handles onto a
piece of paper and send it to you,
If you think this would help it would not be a problem.

There can be.

Sometimes there is a horizontal spring loaded pin which pops into a mating hole on the handle to hold it in place. You would find that very easily because there must be a button head, located on the edge at 90º to the handle slot, to pull when you want to remove the handle.

If there is a pin all you need to do is drill holes in the sides of the handle in the correct place.

I used to have some broken ones which sound like the right size. What part of the country are you? The break is in one of the two prongs which push over the spring. They work but don't stay in the slot when you take the pressure off. If I can find them, you're welcome to them if I can get them to you. When this thunderstorm is over, I'll start looking.

Bob,
I've got the same winches but just the one handle. A friend who used to crew on my boat before I bought it told me he knows whether the other is... the Bench Head! There must be a mountain of this lost kit out there somewhere. Seriously I'll send you a digital photo if you want to identify one or make one. pm me if you need it.
