Tube Heaters

Whilst I think the use of a Min/Max Thermometer is a great idea and can be comforting in a cold snap, there is one thing to be aware of..... Many of the cheaper remote systems only store the High Low history for up to 24 hours. Therefore when you return to the boat after a week and see that the min temp was a toasty 3 degrees, it may actually be telling you that the low of that day was 3 degrees and not the previous week as you may think. The expensive weather stations store for long periods but a lot of the cheaper remotes dont.

Thanks for the note, but my cheap electric one does have history - simple min/max until you press the reset. I also have the good old fashion non-electrics one and that reads near enough the same as the electric one.

Like many on here I use tube heaters and a thermostat. I was worried about an open element heater. I know its got the grill, but what if something unexpected happened and somehow fuel sprays on it, and ignited. I don't leave a fan on for the reasons stated above. I also use two 3ft tube heaters in case on fails. That does leave the thermostat as a source of failure of course, but you have to stop somewhere.

In the cabin I use the 700w mini oil-filled radiators (also from TLC) on v low setting.

The heater you show does look like it would do the job, if you can be sure nothing can fall on it or spray on it. Its hard to imagine the unexpected.

I have connected a thermo auto switch twixt the shoreline cable and socket. When the unit comes on it powers up all that is in line i.e. in my case 2 tube heaters in the engine room 1 in each bedroom and one in the saloon. Also iit turns on a d/humidifier and the battery charger. It is also helpful to block the vents to the engine room as the heat rises and is lost. I have also heard that if your boat is out of the water by leaving the speed log out cold can drain out of the boat like water.

I had some serious quality problems with the Timeguard thermostat plugs supplied by TLC. I now have 2 that work OK, out a total of 7 supplied. Timeguard are very good with replacements, but clearly had a design or quality issue.

My son an electronics engineer knocked this thermostat up for me, it also records the time the tube heater has been running. As its outside the engine compartment it's well away from any petrol fumes, also very accurate.

If your son starts selling them let us all know, I think he might have some orders, it does look good quailty and pricey.

I bought the components from RS Components for around £140 and it took him about 2 hours to build it. It senses through a 2 metre long stainless steel probe. There's no chance of any more, he's far to busy with beer, snooker and football.

If anybody is interested in having a go I will gladly list the part numbers.

I would give it a blast so part numbers much appreciated.

I know there is plenty of discussion about tube heaters on here but is it safe to leave them on all the time? I have fitted one in the engine bay on Friday and been keeping an eye on it over the weekend and all seems fine but I have to leave the boat for a week now and usually turn everything off.
I guess this is for boats in commision, but I m not sure why everyone is heating their boat- or engine bays, unless you are in northern Norway. The boat is sitting in water that is.. what.. +6-10 degrees? And what sort of eleccy bill are you getting for running a 200w heater for 8 hours a day for months on end?

We keep 'B.A' in a wet-shed and have two 80w tube heaters onboard, they protect the fresh water tanks (2) and the Beta engine quite nicely. Plugged into shore power thermostat set to 2c.
Recommended.

I have a auto thermostatic switch twixt the shore power in cable and the boat socket. Only when the temp. drops to 3deg the whole boat comes on. I have 2 tubes in the engine dep. and 2 inside. It also brings on the charger etc.

Nice idea i was thinking to do exsactly the same thing i was worried about switching anything using a thermostat due to the risk of failor, what type of protection are you using with the box? standard RCD?

Another option would be to try an Elliwell stat; does the same job but you can fit "K" type flexible probes that can be changed for surface/air/water type if you wish..
