TSUNAMI threat to *all* Pacific Islands (FP) + Hawaii & Japan

Ian, the trouble is that a large number of liveaboards and cruisng yachtsmen/women will be sleeping at anchor on the FP islands. These atolls are only a few feet above mean sea-level.

This is a huge earthquake and tsunami news is being updated and coming in all the time.

Japan has just issued a warning of the threat along its south east coastline 17,000 kms away!!

I guess most folks, including myself, don't realise the frequency of these events, particuarly around the Pacific rim area.

Thanks David for your continued updates....... as mentioned earlier, cruising people in these remote areas need as much fore warning as possible.

hopefully people will be far out at sea.

Tsunamis generally cause the most damage where there is shoaling water, as this allows the wave to increase in size as it approaches. Where there is a very rapid change in water depth such as to the approach of a typical atoll, the wave does not have such destructive powers. Thus the larger volcanic islands and continental coasts are likely to be the most at risk. Just some comfort for those anchored in the Pacific Atolls with only a few meters of land mass!

Thanks for the message. I actually broke the news just about 15 minutes after the original earthquake and before the news had hit the media (BBC,Sky, CNN etc).

I am now (0011Z Sunday 28 Feb) getting reports of the Chilian tsunami arriving on the coastline of New Zeland with incoming tsunami waves of 2 metres and that is after crossing the whole of the south pacific! These waves can arrive on the shoreline for up to four hours after the original wave has landed. It is not just one wave and then its all over save for the mopping up!

The Marquesas islands, northeast of Polynesia, were hit between 7:00 and 8:00 am by a series of two-metre waves which damaged some boats but no one was hurt, officials said.

A four-metre wave hit Hiva Oa in the Marquesas, officials said.

In Tahiti where two-metre high waves hit the coast all traffic was banned within 500 metres of the ocean.

The tsunami could also be as high as two metres on Rurutu in the Australes, the authorities said, while warning people to climb to at least 10 metres above sea level.

Emergency officials told AP a 50cm wave has hit the Chatham Islands about 500km east of New Zealand, the third to come ashore in the island group.

"As the scientists have predicted, the waves are increasing in amplitude ... and it's likely they will grow more," Civil Defence national controller Allan Walker said.

Tsunamis generally come in several waves of which the first may not be the highest.

I hope everyone managed to slip and make safe deep water?

Time will tell.

That's a good example then David.....we are only 1100 miles west of NZ, and often anchor on our east coast in an open rodestead anchorage, due to a regular westerly weather pattern.

If a 2 metre breaking wave hit my little boat in the early hours of the morning, it would probably mean capsizing.

Stay close to that radio please.....:o
