Trying to update firmware on a Raymarine E120, but...

...the thing has a CF card.
Which wouldn't be an issue, if it weren't that we have probably a dozen of devices onboard, between portable PCs, smartphones, etc., and NONE of them have a CF card reader/writer.
So, I can't figure how to copy the firmware update on a CF card for upgrading the E120.
Now, before looking for some computer shop who still has a CF card reader, I was wondering if there isn't any other trick for updating the plotter firmware that doesn't require a CF card.
Over to you Raymarine wizards, with many thanks in advance! :)

LOL, I should have seen that coming....
How can you know what sort of penny pincher I am!? :D

Actually, It's for the boat of a forumite friend, who will fly back home at the end of the week.
And we are cruising in places where I have little hope to find thingies like that in local shops...
...not that it's so urgent anyway, we could as well buy one of those readers online and take care of that another time.
I was just hoping that there might be another trick, like some way to connect a pc directly to the plotter?
Just a thought...

Yes, a raymarine service centre can update the software for you instead.
Only €60 or thereabouts.

Buy a card reader, or find/beg/borrow a PC or laptop with one!
Someone with a high end Canon SLR is likely to have one.

I've done it several times about 4 years ago but I've tried again recently and failed miserably. Have spoken to Raymarine and have followed what they tell me to do, still nothing.

Have now given up having wasted hours of my time. Nothing is easy with Raymarine!!

The other way of doing it is to visit Navionics at the next boat show or directly if more urgent. Take your current one with you and buy the upgrade to the Navionics Chart under what ever promo is being offered. Check your software version No. and just ask for the latest E120 firmware as you don't have a reader.

They will most likely, give you the E120 upgrade chip if you ask nicely, they did for me, after all they want to sell their upgrades and Platinum won't operate on the previous E120 versions.

The sad part is I have one somewhere and couldn't find it this morning, just the empty cases, I must have lent it to someone and not had it returned.:ambivalence:

Thanks RR, that sounds interesting.
Did I understand correctly that you gave them the old CF cartography card and they gave you an updated CF card, together with another card for the E120 firmware upgrade?
And do you remember what the cost of the upgrade was?
It's actually a Med cartography I'm talking about, and I guess you're talking of UK seas, but just to have an idea....
