I own a Hustler 32 and am slowly converting her into a comfortable cruiser. She has Hydraulic Propulsion and currently uses a VP2003 engine. The Hydraulic Transmission appears to be a Volvo part as it is a perfect fit and not adapted. There is no output shaft, it is water cooled and the filter is located at the rear of the transmission inline with the engine. I cannot find any part numbers. Does any one know what this transmission is so that I can find its specifications.

It could well be one of these varen4u.nl/pdfs/hydromarin/hydromarin.pdf which were also made in Ireland and often fitted to Farryman engines.

The experts in this country on hydraulic systems for propulsion are peachment.co.uk and it might be worth asking them.

While such things have attractions in some types of boat, for example hire boats in the French canals they never really caught on in yachts because of the loss in power and complexity.

Some years ago, I purchased a Perkins 4 108 engine form a road sweeper that has several hydraulic pumps to drive various attachment

Sols the engine so the hydraulic pumps ae still in my garage with hydraulic starter motor

Sorry that its taking so long to respond to this thread, I was hoping to get back to the boat last week but health problems dictated otherwise. I had colon cancer and although I am clear now, it has left me with issues. I am also awaiting delivery of new injectors so I will be back on the boat later next week and will take some photos. Thanks for all the response.

I finally managed to Identify my Hydraulic transmission system, it was made by ARS Anglian Diesel Ltd. They have a website promoting their Hydraulic systems for Industrial, Agricultural and Marine sectors. I have contacted them for information as they have nothing on their website so hopefully I will finally be able to get closer to hull speed.

I don't have much hope of a reply as the current owner was only 11yrs old when this was being produced so if there is anyone in the community with information I would be very grateful.

Finding a decent anybody nowadays is very difficult, everyone here knows someone and most don't have the knowledge to judge. I am not a Hydraulic or Electrical Engineer but I can understand and design circuits and have worked in both areas in industry. I still like to do my research before taking things apart which is why I am searching for information. The problem I have is that 28hp engine does not generate enough power at low revs to drive the propeller. The previous owner overcame this by setting the prop to 18 deg, at this angle it cannot get anywhere near hull speed. The question is whether the pump is running at too high a pressure due to a restriction or loading on the hydraulic motor. Bearing in mind that the original engine was only about 12 horsepower and has been swapped for a 28hp you can assume other people have looked at this. As a last resort I will fit a bypass to reduce the pressure so as to stop the engine stalling and allow the hp to rise thus allowing propulsion to be maintained as the hull speed increases. I do intend servicing this unit probably just oil and filter but information is always useful.

I once, in the mid 70's, had the task of identifying a rack and pinion steering gear driven by a single cylinder steam reciprocating engine. This was manufactured by Sunderland Forge and Engineering Company, of that ilk. I visited the factory and was given the privilege of being shown into the Head Draughtsman's Office. He produced a leather bound volume from his library. This showed that the unit was originally made for a Hull Trawler late 1940's. It wasn't used and was installed in the ship I was involved with in 1952.
Moral of the story is . Don't be surprised at what information some of these companies hold ;)

Those were the days when companies and tradesmen took pride in their work and their history. Unfortunately due to one politician that culture changed to a throw away don't give a F society, so sad.
