I recently sold an antenna tuner to a bloke through the For Sale forum.Problem is this guy never paid for the thing. We had a quite pleasant chat over the phone and he said he was wary of sendig his money by post as a friend of his had had a bad experince with E-Bay.Being a gullible sort of person I agreed to post the tuner to him and wait for the payment in return.Surprise surprise it never arrived and i've just about given up any hope that it ever will.I don't think I'll ever buy or sell anything in the For Sale forum again.

Name and shame this person. I've had this on another site that I use, not this one. The guy bought some items from me and then stopped the cheque. The difference on the other site is that you have to give your address to register. They check it somehow then give you a password by email. Common practice over there is to name non payers and shisters!

Re: A clue, perhaps?

I thought that too, but someone could have replied via PM. If it was the person that replied to the post they give details of being YM instuctor in their bio. So it wouldn't be hard to get their details from the RYA.......if they are a RYA insructor that is!

I've been got too. I am advertising an engine that I am breaking for parts. A Swede wanted the gearbox sent by next day delivery to Sweden, at a cost to me of £60. 3 weeks later, no replies to email, phone permanently off. So not only have I lost my gearbox but I am £60 down as well.

The amount of money I have made from selling the parts is trivial, I have done this because I want to recycle and also help others with very expensive Bukh engine parts. I don't know why I bothered now.

Well, he gave an address. But is it his real one?I am tempted to divulge it but I don't want to stoop to his level. It's not the money that bothers me it's the feeling of having been had that I don't like.

Its a real shame that this person has taken advantage, more so because it will discourage use of a handy (free) facility.
Ebay operates a feedback system so if buyer or seller is ripped off the ripperee is effectively blackballed. If there is no sanction on this sort of behaviour it will continue.
I think you should reconsider your decision not to blow the whistle.

Iv bought several items here off the "For Sale column"
One of which was a vhf radio which was supposedly working, but on arrival was'nt.

Another item I wanted sent the cheque off, couple of weeks went by, "nothing"
Got his phone number through "Directory Inquiries" and rang him, he sounded quite flustered but
explained that he had been to busy to send it off,
It arrived about a week later and was exactly as he had advertised it, "Perfect"
Just needed a reminder thats all !!!!!!!!

But have had on the whole some excellent buys,
Not everyone is robbing bugger, though of course this is of no help to you.

One letter to the address you sent the tuner to, saying payment within 7 days or you will publish his details anywhere you can including the forums. Is it close enough to visit?

Out of interest, how overdue is his payment and have you tried to contact him to "remind" him that you have not received any payment?

To me, it seems a bit unlikely that someone would give a valid address (presumably it must be his address since thats where you dispatched the tuner to) if they had no intention of paying for it - more likely he has just forgotten - still not excusable but perhaps corrected with a polite reminder. Its also just possible although unlikely that his cheque has been lost in the post. If he still doesn't pay up after a reminer then I would have no worries about naming here so that we can all avoid doing business with him.

I had a similar bad experience on Ebay as a buyer where some goods I had paid for did not arrive. But in the end it did turn out that the guy was genuine and I got what I paid for eventually - its worth remembering that post etc is not 100% reliable and when money is involved, its very easy to assume the worst before it is justifed.

I have bought 3 items in last 6 months through the forum and have found the people I dealt with to be dead straight and very helpfull. I sent cheque off to two of them and got goods back before the cheques had cleared. Other one came from Holland and. Chap said check out the instruement and if OK pay him what it was wirth to me. I would not deal so readily with a new user unless I could ckeck out address etc.
I think you should name the buyer. Good luck. Paul

I think it's a good point to remind him; after all what guarantee do you have that the goods arrived? He might be equally frustrated!

At the end of the day it's a gut feeling to trust someone and you will always risk being taken advantage of. Why not draw up a contract of sale? At least you get a bit more info to check out before the goods are exchanged.

If he stopped the cheque you should sue him, you have an open and shut case. It may even be a criminal offence.

Small Claims Court

Has anyone ever tried pursuing one of these claims through the small claims court - the buyer is in breach of contract. A court summons might also jog his memory or conscience. It costs £30 so might be throwing good money after bad.

I've just had this problem with a forum member......I sent him a cheque for 158 squids (which he cashed on the 4th July) in payment for some wind instruments etc......have heared nothing since and have sent him a reminder pm that hasn't been replied to! The address he supplied fails to elicit a phone number from BT so where do you go??....he comes from Exeter and berths his boat in Lymington , he's a frequent (or was!!) contributor to these boards. Is he dead? has he gone away on business? or just plain forgot? Don't know. Am starting to get a bad feeling about it though !!!
