I wonder if there is a PC version of the mnemonic [is that the right word?] I learnt in the Royal Navy for remembering the colour code of resistors. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Well.....we all know that variation is the difference between true and magnetic, and that deviation is the difference between magnetic and compass.....don't we, 'cos it's obvious, innit?
Well and good- I used to teach that Twenty Vodkas Make Drunken Captains, and Captains Do Many Vicious Things but for the life of me I can't remember the mnemonic from Southampton U for the "West is Best- Add/East is Least- Subtract" aide-memoire.
Someone taught me a nice simple little rhyme to try help me remember, but after I understood WHY it worked, I promptly forgot it!

Bye Bye Rosie On You Go to Birmingham Via Great Western
Thanks Ian- "CADET"-that was it!
Rowana: what does Bye Bye Rosie actially stand for? Just so as I know? It looks as if Richard Of York Goes Battling (the mnemonic for the rainbow's colours) somewhere in there?
It's black, brown, then the colours of the rainbow then white. They needed 10 colours and rainbows only have 7. Black is 0 and white is 9. There are usually 4 bands, the first two being the number, and the last being the number of zeros, so red, yellow, orange becomes 230000, 23 with 4 zeros. The forth band is the manufacturing tolerance. Occasionally there are more bands which will be of interest to electronic engineers, but few others...
Bad Boys Ravish Only Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly
I wouldn't say that out loud in case the Peadofinder General hears you.
I have to admit that I'm happy to stick with the non pc version as I've learnt it and it is now locked in my memory! I've been taught the extended version though, which is even less pc -
True Virgins Make Dull Company (+ Willies), where 'willies ' stands for westerly variation
Cadburys Diary Milk, Very Tasty (+ Exciting).
Not pc, but works for me. I guess it comes from having an ex Royal Marine for a YM instructor /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
