Hello. I am new to this forum and this is my first input into it.
I am thinking of some friends and I may well travel to Columbia for a jolly excersion and I was wondering if anyone on this forum would have any advice?
As anyone encountered any problems? What equipment would you recommend. On the grand SCALES of it all I wonder if customs would be a problem?

a friends son went out there to do a summer holiday job with grandfather on his estate. He came home after 5 days. Couldn't take the kidnapping and being taken everywhere with a bodyguard. Nothing happened to him, but it's an area you'd want to be aware of what you are getting into.

If you mean Colombia and not British Columbia, kidnappings are rife outside of Bogota - and even there some care is necessary. Why don't you check out the FCO website for travel advice - I'm sure the US State Dept will have a v.informative website as well.

I ran a crew of 9 to Columbia in 1993 so things may have changed a little since then but we encountered few problems. Preparation is the key to a smooth operation though - critical in fact. Without detailed preparation, you'll be more useless than a dickless man in a brothel.

Here's a brief checklist:

1. Map to Columbia - obvious really!
2. Food and drink to cover twice the journey time. Go light on the beans - aftermath not good in confined quarters.
3. Change of clothes. Waterproofs recommended.
4. Weapons - pirates are common in some coastal sections. 5 of my crew were ex-army/mercenaries and we were well equipped to deal with most situations.
5. Pen and paper for that goodbye note to loved ones if all goes pearshaped..


There's much, much more to consider but this is some of the essentials. Anyway, work beckons so ciao and bon voyage skipper!


P.S. I'll be running a 76' yacht to India early next year. Looking for 4 female crew members. Must be very attractive.

Well simply I have a lot of business dealings there and so I thought I would combine a bit of business and pleasure...
I'm told that the countryside is rather nice. Very secluded in places.
Maybe bring back a few bits and pieces that sort of thing...

hmm I think someones taking the p155 - you want to go to columbia, have mentioned Scales, 'business interests', Customs and bringing things back from the interior. I guess you must be asking if anyone knows how to fill up a yacht with a couple of hundred kilos of cocaine? I think you've come to the wrong place my friend - most of this forum wouldn't even notice tons of coke inside a boat, unless of course the nav lights were configured incorrectly or the col-regs wern't observed to the nth degree - then we'd all have sh*t loads of advice.

If you rent a car whilst you're out there, make sure that the horn goes "toot-toot", and that you take care to drive between the white lines. On balance, I reckon the trip is too risky and my advice to you would be to make an excuse and cancel the trip or, as our American friends say, "take a powder".

There's much more fun to be had from a trip to the Alps - if you wait for a couple of months, there will be plenty of snow.
