The pump on my Volvo QL hydraulic tabs is getting tired but the tabs, cylinders and pipework are fine.
Should I replace the pump (discontinued) or fit their new all-electric 'shutter' system? Or change to another brand?
Boat is semi-displacement, 26ft LWL, max speed 12 knots, weight about 4 tons.

Wonder why these are fitted at all. One seventy mile trip I did with them down - same trip another time up - not the slightest difference in speed, fuel used, ride - nothing. Even the boats manual comments they are not usually required!

Wouldn't bother with the 'shutter' type, waste of space and a joke, I have three sets on a 52 and each one of them broke so went back to Lenco standard ones. When you see them in the flesh they are plastic and look like they are made in a Chinese toy factory..rubbish !

No question about being useful: fully down adds a knot at 10 knots - and can see where I'm going!!
Fixing would make sense - but we go river/canal cruising at half that speed.

Just 'cos its discontinued doesn't mean you wont find one on the shelf somewhere. If they worked OK before the pump broke, then that must be the cheapest and easiest fix? I'd try phoning round.

Agree, when they work 'bobs your uncle', very effective but for durability and lasting the distance they are too fragile in my experience, even if you splash a bit of antifoul around the gate the blades slide down from they get stuck.

I have to agree with Jez. Mine have been on for a couple of seasons and covered some serious miles and they are still fantastic. Will be upgrading to the Auto version soon.

I seem to remember there being some limits on the boats that they could be fitted to. Cant remember now if it was boat speed or boat size but maybe yours was too big or too fast. Mine are on a 25 footer and used at speeds up to 30 knots.

Could be right on that, so I'll cavet it by saying...... " the world record holder for top speed on an IPS boat, the Absolute 47, does 43 knts, so I may well be past the design limits of these units" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cor! you should know not to give me an inch /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

.. but what does an Absolute 47 look like, and is there room for two slim young ladies in one? How are we supposed to know if you don't post a photo? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think you're losing your touch ..

I can do better than that............. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

About ten days ago off Cannes for the official brochure shoot.

Become a total anorak, hassle the bejesus out of them, keep visiting the yard, make all sorts of suggestions, spend hours with your head inside the prototypes, annoy the poor workers with your constant questioning and opinions and eventually they will relent and let you drive it, just to get rid of you, that should do it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ]Urgh!
If you explain me what that's supposed to mean in plain English, I can try and adjust the above to make it understandable in Italian either....

yeah alright I tried to cheat,

overheard the boss trying to get rid of this annoying Irishman who keeps turning up at the yard, something about sleeping with fishes or a horses head in the bed, not sure what he meant !

Typical! Some poor git wants serious advice and the thread is railroaded into fantasy land by dimwits who can hardly paddle a coracle!
(Just zoom in on those knockers in the stern please . . . )

50knots max speed....more than that and the blades can bend, apparently.

The auto system is good but needs the gyro fitted as low in the boat as possible.

I am really happy with mine...retrofitted to Sunseeker Superhawk 34 and used for a year.

Only problem I have is that I think I over-specced them. I went for the 450mm blades not the 300mm blades. I find them super sensitive and only need them set to 1 or 2 and they make a huge difference. But that is what was recommended by Volvo....

My only other problem with them is the trim buttons only go "one way"...what I mean by that is that when you press the port tab button the tab goes down, but only down. if you overdo it then you have to put the tabs up all the way and start again.

Small gripes though...
