Tri's are for the young and are wasted on those of us of more mature years, with sensible ideas and the need for creature comforts. We are quite happy if we can propel our floating caravan and make an average 10 knots over 100nm (with only one person on deck)

I’ve known tri owners in their 80s!
In some ways they suit the mature sailor- less heel, more comfortable :)

Each type presents their own drawbacks. Our Dragonfly can fit in a marina berth long term, Farriers cannot, because of their folding mechanism, the float sides being immersed. But the folding with Farriers is so slick, effort free, strong and clever. The Dragonfly needs winching. Us Dragonflys also have considerably higher float volume, which is reassuring when pressing on. I personally prefer that, having tried both. However, for anyone uninitiated in the ways of trimarans, they’re not going to notice. What they notice is the sheer speed, the quiet, apart from the apparent wind that is, and the calmness, even with consistent double digit speeds. A cup of tea is perfectly possible at 15kn. It gets a bit more tense as you approach 20!
Yes totally true, although although I know one owner who kept a Farrier in a single finger berth - antifouling the sides of the floats, tho’ not pretty!

The Dragonfly Swing Wing system is the fact that the boats can stay folded in a marina berth.
This special design, where the floats move down deeper into the water when folded and actually lifts the centre hull by 7 to 10 cm, gives this extra stable comfort.

The Dragonfly 25 and 28 can easily be folded manually, but on the Dragonfly 32 the Swing Wing system can be operated with one or two optional electrical winches.
On the Dragonfly 40 there are 4 electric winches on a standard boat which can be used to operate the Swing Wing system.

In my mid 60's, but fairly active and quite young at heart on sailing I look forward to sailing on my Corsair F-27.?

I think the 28 would present difficulty to most people without a winch, well, the second float anyway, the first one whistles in on our 920.. But its the unfolding that really needs it, the last part of which tensions the trampolines. Whereas with the Farrier, you just stand on the beam end if you need to, but usually the flotaion of the outrigger sorts that out for you. As we have a mid river mooring with no penalty for wide beam, I‘d have an F-boat in a heartbeat but for the outrigger volume.

Is there a difference between the Corsairs and the Farriers ?

Farrier designed all the original corsairs. They follow most of his design philosophy to this day.
Yes he sold the company to Corsair who then i think outsourced production to the Far East.
Ian Farrrier then started making a new smaller model in New Zealand (plus selling some older kit versions).

I would like to do 10 knots, even occasionally! I passage plan at 5 knots for my floating caravan and I still seem to get to a destination; but not always the one I wanted ....

We passage plan for 10kn through the water unless the wind is very light. 8kn under power is possible, with a 15hp outboard.

The only time you must arrive 'somewhere' is when the forecast was wrong and you NEED shelter - if you have a schedule set in concrete the pleasure can evaporate quite quickly (unless you are collecting a lottery prize :) ).

Touching the surfaces exposed to direct sunlight leaves a whitish powdery mark on your finger tips.

How do we prepare and polish the surface?
Do we 'T cut' it ?
Automotive polish and buffing?


Suggestions and recommendations would be appreciated.

I’d try a small area, perhaps the aft part of an ama top. Sponge off with oxalic acid solution, then cutting compound, then wax. Is she crusty with old antifoul too? Our Dragonfly had 20 years worth, that was a right pain.

Might need a bit more than that if it's gone that far - some 800 or 1200 grit wet and dry might save a lot time - as above, try on a small area first, and be careful not to put pressure on corners - you don't want to go through the gelcoat

Do marinas still charge a surcharge if you can berth it folded? Some charge 50 percent extra and at least one I know of charges double for multihulls.
