Trimarans tipping over like skittles.

Doesn't matter if they retake the start. I think.

I haven't checked the rules, but I think not otherwise outside assistance wouldn't be a problem before the start and I'm sure it's a problem from the prep signal onwards.

Don’t forget that most ocean races have SIs that allow boats to stop for support and then continue.

And presumably Formula 1 racing should be moved to VW Golf hatchbacks as surely F1 isn't safe ?

There are lots of ways to race old slow boats (though the Golden Globe Race had one of the highest rates of knockdowns and total boat losses).

Wait till you see the Ultims - they make these 50 footers look sedate. 100 foot long and fully foiling, going upwind last night at 27 knots over the waves.
Oh and an Ultim has flown (literally) around the world singlehanded - imagine doing 30-45 knots on foils in the Southern Ocean whilst (trying to be) asleep.

I don't think I have ever seen an F1 race where I've seen three cars upside down.
Could someone invent something that dramatically releases the mainsail if it tips beyond a certain angle?

Surprising how some people infer things from three words.

I imagine that anyone who has sailed in the Solent knows there is vvrtually no swell as is found offshore and shelter can be found from any wind direction.

I believe that you know all of this very well and for some reason, you have opted to post off track.

Completely up to you, of course.

I was under the impression that you spent quite a lot of time 200m below the surface - where there are no annoying waves and gusts 🐟

Isn't that the person hanging on to the mainsheet??
Isn't the trouble with these serious racing tris that the difference between race-winning speed and oops - splash is a few milliseconds of delay in easing the sheet? Humans just don't react that fast, and I suspect you'd have too many false positives in any automatic system; it's bad enough for a human to judge if that degree more heel is just a wave going by or the beginnings of an expensive retirement, I doubt anything short of a very good AI would manage it with any degree of accuracy, and even if they are that good, ISTM that any AI system, would be going against the spirit of sailing races.

Real intelligence should be better than the artificial variety.

I was thinking of something that would dramatically dump the main and require 10 mins or so to sort it out so that you’d avoid doing it again. Not an AI on the helm.
