At Ramsgate over the weekend,walked around on Satuday morning and went for a closer look at a yacht that seemed to have a bouncy castle attached to it.It was the collapsed remains of an aluminiam revolving sail.
It came in under its own power but under escort,I can't imagine what it would have been like aboard when it happened.The yacht was about 50 feet with motability stickers all over it.
Anybody know anything about it?

This wouldn't be the Walker Wingsail Zephyr, would it?

When you say revolving, do you mean is spun round at great speed or that it was a rigid sail system which rotated in response to changes in apparent wind direction?

Not sure really,looked like there were four aerofoil shaped wings mounted vertically off a hub.Nobody hurt but you would'nt want to have been on deck.

Nope,similar looking hull but actually has a hub (helicopter like) at the base of what were the sails.

Yes,think thats the one.The sails are now orange and it does have wheelchair access stickers on it.

That's the Walker Wingsail Zephyr. If it was not all so sad I would be tempted to say 'there's a surprise'.

I think it is a bit of a surprise, cause that boat has done a lot of miles without problems, and this weekend was not that excessive in wind force.

3 years ago met a new walker in mayflower marina. he had come back from his first trip for repairs to the rig control systems. he tried to motor up to a windward pontoon within the marina but couldn't because the twin outboards were cavitating even in the flat water. not a happy bunny.

It certainly would not have been my choice for a boat. I always think Tris are great if you want speed, but are not really a cruising boat cause theres no real accomodation, and the berthing fees must be a nightmare!
