I've just got a new style second hand trim / tilt pump for my 290 leg (the previous one was stolen). The new one has got a round connection socket comtaining 3 wires, blue, green and red.

The existing main loom has got a connection for 2 wires, blue and green.

I do have the old tilt pump loom (2 relays etc..) and this has got the connection for 2 wires but the loom which came with the new pump is in a much better state then the old one.

Any ideas where the red one goes ?

Hi

Not sure if this is going to be of any help or not. As far as I can remember the 290's pumps are all 2 wires except the early version that had 3 but not in the colours you quote, they were one green, one blue and one black. The other versions had one blue/white and one green/white. Are you sure the one you have is for a 290? I think the one you have is a SX trim pump and the wiring is completly different. This one has the 3 cables of the colours you mentioned. Is there a 10A circuit breaker on the side of the pump, if yes then it's a SX pump.
Hope this is of some help.

Blue and green are the up/down circuits on all trim pumps, the red needs to connected to a power supply.
Just make sure that you have 12v to the relays and an earth, the blue and green will be to the trim button.

Thanks for the advice, its diffently a SX pump as there is a 10amp fuse. The pump has a green / blue which is connected to the relays via the blue-white / green-white.

I understand I could run the red lead to the guages and feed off from the +ve from the back of one of them.

Thanks for the help.

I would'nt connect the red cable if it has a 10a fuse to the gauges as you will overload the ignition switch and harness. The supply for a trim pump is always directly to the battery via the starter motor on a Volvo, connect it to the starter on the same terminal as the battery cable and it will be fine.

Fair point, I didn't think about over loading the harness. My reasoning behind it was the 3 cables connect onto the main harness / loom but can easily be routed back to the terminal.

Just looked at the wiring diagram, if you have 3 wires in the plug which goes up to the trim switch you don't need to connect the red as this is the supply up to the trim buttons on the later style trim switch, and I guess you already have a supply from the panel to the switch if you only had a 2 wire system previously, so just connect the trim wires blueand green to your existing harness. There should be a plus and minus connection on your 'new' pump, this is the plus which should go via a 10 amp fuse to your starter motor.
Hope this helps.

Thanks the info, this is what I orgainally was going to do, I can terminate the red and just connect the blue / green.

I had the old harness which I was convinced I needed to use but then relaised the new pump already had a harness all ready connected.

Thanks again.
