triggs lock locked!!

hi all i went for a cruise hoping to get to the thames...only to get to triggs lock to find someone had locked up the lock gates with an extraordinary heavy chain.....this chain would have taken at least 3 men to heave this chain over the back of their boat ..it was wound round it 3 times...i rang national trust they told me that there was nothing on the river conditions or any stoppage she called the banksman who took ages to get their to sort it out....apparently he didnt know anything either....i was wndering if anyone else knew why this had happened ...never had a problem before. so i turned around and cruised home...it was very strange.
 
It's on the Wey. As much right to be discussed here as Medway matters.
To the OP, don't be put off by the response here. Sorry I can't answer your question though. I was thinking of having a look up the Wey next Spring. If you find out what it was about, please let us know. Thanks.
 
If you do make your way down the Wey to the Thames it would be cool if you took a whole bunch of photos and published them here. So few of us have any experience of that river.
 
im now looking to move my boat.....apparently there been suspicious activity on the river. that was the last warm day for me to get to my friends bbq...i didnt get there it was so annoying..so im off to the midlands...at least there i will have no problems...as im moving home too...so onwards and upwards

And to all Thames boaters, as long as your beam is no more than 13t 10 inches, it's more waterway that you can explore.
 
It's not the beam that is the problem on the Wey for some boaters. Its the airdraft. Managed to get to the Anchor pub at Pyrford about 4 years ago with an airdraft of 7ft 6ins. More like millimetres at some of the bridges than inches! Well worth the hassle but pick a quiet week day early or late season as you do not want to meet a narrowboat at the wrong place. The Anchor pub was well worth the visit.
 
well ive since been in toch with the national trust and theyve assured me that there were no jobs booked for the lock and no job before or after the lock in question....so they havent got a clue as to why the lock was locked and with a very heavy chain???
as id already emptied the lock i saw a man who was at his mooring alongside of the lock quite a nice spot.....and all he did was watch me struggle...im not after all narrowboaters but some of them are bloody miserable buggers.....but i did think long and hard aout this and i did mention it to the national trust who have also told me that this isnt the first time this has happened
but she is wondering the same thing as me....were wondering if he had something to do with it ....as he was just smiling in his boat....
 
The Wey is very nice. Been up there a few times over the years. Our latest trip was a week to the end and back in one of my boats (40ftx9ft canal boat without wheelhouse or canopy) in May. Being very low air draft it was comfortable getting to godalming. Broadford bridge is really very low at about 6ft above the water. I know you can do it in a boat up to about14ft beam in theory but it would be quite technical in places. I seem to remember last time we went about 5 years ago there was a wide beam trip boat up there but no sign of it this time.
