I have an Ambassador Stripper rope cutter fitted like this...

...except my P bracket is GRP which is not strong enough to carry the standard striker plate mount. The one that was on there was ripped out on first encounter with a rope.

Has anyone solved this problem? Any ideas are welcome??

A S/S slotted sleeve with legs is available, made specifically for your boat. Quite expensive IIRC. Boat was a GibSea 96.

I made mine from a 5 inch length of tube the correct diameter, I hacksawed a slot and got two legs made from S/S strip welded on. The fixed blade was welded to the tube. Two bolts - I drilled two holes through each leg - secured the legs through the composite P bracket.

Still there and working AFAIK.

Rotax, do you have a picture of your DIY sleeve? Were you happy drilling holes through the P bracket? And I can't find a commercially available S/S slotted sleeve.

Vyv, Ashtead, I spoke to Ambassador. Their clamp won't fit as the leg of the bracket is coincident with both ends for the tube carrying the cutlass bearing ....and they don't have a sleeve version.

Sorry no - it was over ten years ago.

I had no problem drilling the "P" bracket - a well known Gosport yard fitted the rope cutter. They used a contractor who drilled and tapped three 8mm threaded holes to secure the fixed cutter to the composite material. The moment it picked something up they ripped out. Tossers!

I filled them with thickened epoxy and made my own S/S version of the Ambassador one. It WAS far cheaper, but the main consideration was that I knocked it up in a couple of hours at home and had it fitted the next day. IIRC, Ambassador required detailed drawings and 10 days.

I dont think being coincident is a problem. The fixing for the fixed cutter just needs to be firmly attached. If by coincident you mean the cutlass bore outer is the same thickness as the leg, so what? Find a piece of S/S tube the same size, cut it lengthways and open it out. I used a large power tool deep socket as a panel beating dolly when I shaped mine. Add S/S strip legs and weld on the fixed cutter. My local car accessory shop had the right size tube - used then for bypassing catolitic converters.

Robert is the name of your fathers brother...............................

rotax, The previous owner of my boat must have used the same company, Tossers of Gosport. Same dumb ass solution.

That good advice. Thanks
