Trawler takes out Dingle Marina

So a French trawler, The Bikain, was mooring in Dingle on the West Coast of Ireland yesterday when it stuck in reverse.
It seemed to reverse at a decent pace straight towards the adjacent marine. It appears to have written off a lovely Targa 42 and possible another boat or two. Very sad for the owners. The last time I was there they spent the whole day scrubbing and polishing the boat.

Sad to see - it is a particularly dangerous fault if a morse gear cable breaks as when you are not slowing down and you speed up the engine thinking you have changed gear and all you do is keep ploughing onfaster in whatever gear you were in ;It takes a little while for it to register what is happening and then it is too late and a collision is hard to avoid. How do I know this....

That is horrible. You got to hope that the fishing boat people do a bit of bowing and scraping. Insurance is one thing but there is a lot that it does not 'replace'

Sad to see this dangerous mishap. Very fortunate that did not happen during summer months, there would have been many leisure yachts moored on that visitor pontoon and could have been multiple casualties. We frequently overnight there. Pic below is the exact spot the trawler struck.


There is plenty of space between the marina and the central quay wall for trawlers to manoeuvre. I remember keeping a sharpe eye on this chap when he powered into the harbour and did a marine version of a handbrake turn, and powered his way alongside the quay to unload. No finess, no caution, binary power on, power off, slamming beteen astern and ahead, no wonder some gear boxes give up.



Pity the trawler skipper hadn't the agility of mind to kill the engine, drop the hook, or use bow thruster to avoid the worst of the damage. There are plenty of videos of the collision on social media, there was reaction time. Sad to see.

Just back from Dingle. The long finger in OF’s picture is gone from about halfway down. Lots of polystyrene balls from the floats in the water but they seemed to have done a decent job cleaning up.

The Targa destroyed was not the 42 but closer to 30ft. There was a team salvaging bits from it including the pair of D4s and out drives. Sad sight to see as it looked like a nice boat,
