Firstly to Levkas. Is Thu/Sun to Preveza the only really feasible option?

secondly Athens / Lavrion is Easyjet the cheapest?

Thirdly is the Saronic a nice place to sail or is it a bit industrialised?

The weather in this country is driving me nuts and I need a break!

Preveza is the easiest by far but Athens Airport and then around a 6 hour bus journey is possible.

To Athens Easy jet can be the cheapest but I have used Aegean quite a few times at around £100 one way. They have ample leg room, free food and drink and staff that remember what service used to be like.

Parts of the Saronic, especially along the coast from Athens to The Corinth canal are industrial but there are loads of nice islands around especially if you are going out of Lavrion.

Saronic..nice place to sail?

I am assuming that you are planning a charter for a week or so? The saronic is indeed a very nice place, not at all industrialised except the area around Athens and Piraeus. Only prob at this time of year ,it will be very busy and hot.
There is some great sailing there you could easily spend 2 weeks wandering around the islands and nearby mainland.

Edit...I meant to recommend Jim B's website for lots of useful info but he beat me to it!!!!

Travel to Ionian/Saronic

Using Athens there are good, but not frequent, bus connections to Preveza, Levkas, Patras, Kalamata and Porto Heli. To avoid missed connections and long bus waits, BA do 4 flights a day, so you can time flights to hit connections. However, BA/Aegean are expensive for late bookings - but excellent value if you book months beforehand - with no Easyjet extras to pay

Early charter sell-offs are expensive - you'll be paying for the accommodation you won't be using. Alternative is last minute charter sell-offs, but there's no guarantee you'll get a flight!. Destinations, Corfu (right pain to get to Levkas/Preveza), Preveza, Athens, but these only have limited days of departure.

For pen sketches of the cruise areas, see my web site. For July/August, go south to the Argolic gulf rather than the rather hot and windless Saronic. Nice southerly afternoon sea breezes! Or the Ionian.

maybe a stupid question but how can you leave Corfu by road to get to Preveza ? Corfu is an island, innit?

It is. there are frequent ferries (Big boaty things that carry cars, buses lorries) between Corfu and the Greek mainland. At least there were until a few days ago.

Hi Jimi..I have a spare copy of the Heikell guide for this region.PM me if you are interested. Along with Jim B's website it will give you all the information you need.

Charter flights seem to be getting very expensive these days, I got the following from Thomson's website the other day:

On the other hand, have just booked Bournemouth/Corfu on 30 September on Thomson for £323 for 2 plus £28 for a bag. Cheaper than Easyjet for the same dates and as I am 15 minutes drive from the airport - even better!

Of course a week earlier was nearly £200 more!

You just have to shop around and take the best going.

travel to Greece

I'm off tomorrow Easy Jet to Corfu then a two week charter....

I know you can get a ferry over the to the mainland then a bus down to levkas.

If you want to charter from Corfu have a look at Sunny sailing , i'm using them and have done so in the past.

Enjoy.. I intend too

Telford Mike,

Thompsons are obviously selling that particular departure well. Their "flight only" price is probably the same as their minimum "plus accommodation" holiday price, but without having to pay the house owner!

Nice little earner. If you have a product in short supply, keep the price up, cut the costs!

Ref Igoumenitsa/Preveza buses; I think you'll find there are only a couple a day.

Well Jim, I might have to buy you a beer ;-)

After a false alert when we thought we were going to Lvekas and then when we came to book the flights they were unavailable !! We're now picking up a big cat in Lavrion at the end of August for a week (flying BA, only £6/head more expensive than Easyjet!)

So looking for cruising recommendations for that area!

(I've got a copy of Heikell)
