Hi All, a group of six want to travel to Preveza in mid june. Looking at 300 pounds pp with Thomson. We are going for two weeks. What are the cheaper altrenatives? I have done the journey from Athens before the new bridge was built by Patras. It is the same price from Gatwick to Preveza.
Thanks in anticipation

We returned from Preveza Marine in 2007 by bus Preveza to Athens, then Olympic Athens - Manchester. It was a lot cheaper than charter flights Preveza - Manchester, although none were available to us at that time. Only problem is the bus takes 5 hours. My sister visited us out there last season and she paid about the same as you have been quoted, also with Thomson. At the time she couldn't find anything cheaper.

With six of you it might be worth looking at the seaplane flight from Corfu to Levkas. It's expensive per person but if you can arrange a taxi flight for six could be cheaper. I believe some low cost flights are going to Corfu.

Funnily enough, just looking at the same thing myself as I am thinking of moving my boat from Corfu to Preveza - mainly because Gouvia has jacked its prices up and discontinued their previous all year round rate. Now you have to pay a whole year upfront.

Anyway, the most economic route is via Athens. Typically a BA return is about £160 at the least popular times such as overnight out. Bus is about 30 euros from memory - have not checked this year. Now there is a bus direct from Athens airport to the bus station so no need for expensive taxi.

Alternative direct flights might be worth trying Sailing Holidays. They don't have anything Manchester Preveza in June, but do have Gatwick flighta at about £250.

Have used the Easyjet flights to Corfu and already booked a return in April for about £110. Later in season prices are £150-200 and they run every day. However departure is 6 in the morning from Gatwick. Seaplane flight is great as an experience, but you have to get from Corfu airport to Gouvia and Levkas to Preveza (or wherever you are picking your boat up).

Probably on balance for cost/convenience from Manchester the Thomas Cook is not bad.

.Consider Corfu-Preveza by bus/taxi from Igoumonista .Taxi is approx 80 euro so 160-170 round trip but you need 2 taxis or a minibus which will obviously be dearer .You could pick a large car up at Corfu airport , holiday autos will let you pick up/drop off there but cost for two weeks might make it impractical . Ferry accross was 11 euro per person last year ,car I cant remember but it wasnt too bad . Cheapest has to be bus from Igoumonitsa -preveza -approx 26 euro ,takes 3 hours but its a very scenic route . I think there is three a day to Preveza. For the cost saving its sometimes just worth paying the extra as all the other options eat seriously into your sailing time .You can still pick up cheapish flights to Corfu but often only at short notice so no good for booking ahead with work etc .Good luck.

When our boat was kept in Lefkas marina 2007 we flew manchester to Corfu. Seaplane co picked us up at the airport and took us to Gouvia. Seaplane terminal Lefkas was 50 metre walk to my boat. When my daughter flew out it was too rough for seaplane so they paid for taxi/ferry corfu-Lefkas. Couldnt ask for better service.

Just been looking up the Seaplane site but no schedules published yet for this year. Great service though - took my grandchildren on it to Paxos for the day. Hope it keeps running in these uncertain times.

Thomas Cook can do you a return flight for £257 pp for 2 weeks, dep. 21 june returning 5th july...
Also, they are one of the rare companies who will sell you one-way homebound tickets, so you could book your way there through different means, say with Olympic Airways or easyjet...

I've sailed out of Gouvia for over 10 years, and for about 10 years, prior to that, I holidayed on Corfu 2 to 3 times a year.
Over the years I've looked at every option you could think of, to get to Corfu. Bearing in mind, waiting time, traveling time, delays etc etc, I decided it was well worth the extra cost of about a Hundred quid or so, just jumping on a flight in the uk and flying direct to Corfu.
This philosophy has worked for the holidaying and the sailing.
I've looked at mooring the boat, all over the Ionian, and nothing really compared to the simplicity of going to one airport, and getting off the plane in another, and within 30 mins to an hour, I was on the boat or in a pool.....
(even if Gouvia's getting expensive)

Just our dilemma. Now that Easyjet is flying there it is so much easier and cheaper than using charters. However Gouvia has withdrawn the payment scheme that enables you to pay monthly at the full rate and then get the last 3 months free to get the annual rate. If you want the annual rate you have to pay the whole year up front. This increases the Euro cost if you want to pay monthly by 30%. If I paid in £s now my cost would be 60% higher than last year. Bit hard! So, looking at moving to Cleopatra which is nearly 2000 euros cheaper, and putting up with the poorer access. BA from Heathrow to Athens and then bus is about the same price as Easyjet to Corfu overall, mainly because we can get to Heathrow by bus. Us OAPs need to watch the pennies!

We returned from Preveza to Aberdeen last October. One-way hire car to Igoumenitsa, ferry to Corfu, taxi to airport, Easyjet to Gatwick, one way hire car to Luton, Easyjet to Aberdeen.
There is a daily bus service from Igo, but a 6 seater hire car (or taxi) would be cheaper. Incidentally, a one way hire car was far cheaper than public transport from Gatwick to Luton for two or more people! A sad indictment of our public transport.
