Travel Insurance restricted to exclude sailing.

I suggest the Ombudsman and Small Claims Court.

The type of transport you were using to meet the flight , unless excluded by the terms of the insurance, are patently irrelevant.

If what you say is true, take them to task-Watchdog may like to know about your experience also.

Good Luck.

Encouraging advice, thank you.
Sadly this was 2005, and although I fought like mad I gave up in the end. I think I have destroyed all my paperwork too.

But your advice may be useful to someone "going through the mill" at the present.

Good luck to anyone who is.

I have Alex's platinum policy, but it is restricted to 90days. For my Atlantic circuit I used Insure and Go, which was relatively cheap. I didn't however, get cover for offshore, as it was ridiculously expensive, and was of no practical use. Previous voyage from Oz to the UK, I was young and reckless and didn't have insurance! :)

Bishop Skinner's yachtsman's travel policy, mentioned several times above, is limited to 45 days (62 by special arrangement): this will no doubt suit the needs of many, but not long-term cruisers.

Policy details here: http://assets.bluefingroup.co.uk/me...9befa0f/annual_travel_policy_wording_2013.pdf

That has been excluded from my B & S policy - which is for 5 months-so whilst you may be correct it does demonstrate the real need to study the terms of individual policies along with amendments very carefully. It also demonstrates that terms can easily be re negotiated if one does notice them at an early enough stage. But you have to have the mind of a barrister to understand the terms in the first place.
I have to say that I dislike the trend to internet only booking on some of these situations. It limits discussion with a member of staff although there can be no argument over " he said" afterwards. But it makes it difficult to get any guidance or understanding & leaves one open to ticking the wrong box.
I recently noticed a small error on B & S's policy. The result was they gave me a cheaper, longer policy as a thankyou for being honest & pointing out that their new booking form had a glitch which no one had noticed

While declaring an interest as I work for the company, as an active sailor myself I have made sure our travel insurance policy wording is suitable for sailing on your own boat. As standard, we will cover sailing on any vessel over 10 metres long anywhere within 60 miles of a safe haven (or within 12 mile limit if less than 10m) and there are options to extend to offshore sailing for an extra premium. The Voyager policy is available from hundreds of brokers all over the country or direct from ourselves on www.voyagertravelinsurance.co.uk

And, as an aside, the IPT for travel insurance was not affected by the change in November last year or the further increase to be effective from 1st October this year because it has been set at 20% for many years.
