A friend of mine is looking quite seriously at one of these and as he knew I was into boats asked me my opinion. Other than the basics, I've never been on one so I thought I would ask on here.

Seems like reasonable value, and although I think late 70's it should do him ok for a while. He has a little kiddy (about 3sih) so i guess for two adults plus its ok.

They are quite popular in Plymouth where five race as a class every Wednesday evening at West Hoe Sailing Club. Two more race under Portsmouth Yardstick at Saltash SC on Thursdays, too. Pretty little boats which are much loved by their owners.

Fantastic Boat but I would say that. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Things to watch for.
Cracks/leaks around stantion bases.
Worn/perished engine mountings on original Yanmar engines.
Dodgy gas installations (no dedicated gas locker).

It'll come as no suprise to people who followed the saga of my search for a boat, that I looked very seriously at Trapper 300s and I liked them. Great looking, strong owners association, good accomodation for the size, hell the later ones even have two genuine hanging lockers. You'll find that most have been raced so look for all the normal things you look for on a boat that has been raced.

Now here's the reason I do not own a Trapper 300 - Out of the 5 berths on the MkII layout, not one is over 6'. Indeed four are to small for me and I'm only 5'9 and a bit. Such a shame. Two decent wet lockers is such a plus but at the expense of a nights sleep for all but the diddyest of my crew?
