Transporting outboards - how?

Having taken my Yanmar 9.8 outboard home layed down in my estate car, the cylinder(s) filled with oil and 'hydrauliced" when we triad to start it. So the next time I stood it upright and tied it to the passenger seat, which was not particularly satisfactory.

Are there any suggestions on the best way to transport an outboard in a car?

My 4 stroke outboard has to be kept upright, or laid down on the side with the the 'control arm/tiller thing' downwards. If you lie it down on the other side the oil will misbehave. Look on the engine for markings indicating which side to lie it down on.

I have seen an outboard carried on a cycle carrier with a small panel of ply attached to allow the motor to be attached by its clamps

I've also seen an outboard carrier that sits onto a tow hitch,probably also a modified cycle carrier, or custom made.

I think the advantages of keeping it 'outside' while in transit from a safety point of view, as well as keeping it upright are worth the effort.

A good lock would be a good idea to, as it is when kept on board

last friday we tested eight five hp outboards on my Katie L - 23 foot canoe sterned hunter with an engine

I was amazed that some are supposed to go handle down and some handle up

easy to get it wrong

it is one more area where two strokes score as they don't see to to care how you lay them down

what we need is some sort of organisation to sort this out

some-one should be forced to do something

The owners manual should tell you on which side it can be safely laid

Edit: Misread that as Yamaha. Did not realise Yanmar made outboards . Cannot find any inf on a 9.8

Goodness. You wouldn't want to be transporting a diesel outboard too often.There will be a specific way to lay it. From what I can garner from t'internet it seems to be on it's port side. But the handbook should tell you. Most 4 stroke petrol engines have a handy sticker on them to indicate which way up.
