I've just got my hands on an old boat with an inboard-outboard, complete with a leaky rotten transom. The boats in decent shape, but the transom needs dealing with. I've done the YouTube search, but has anyone tackled such a job before? Any tips, other than do it right?

TIA

You need to tell us how the boat is built. GRP with rotten reinforcing, carvel with wood transom, plywood with wood transom or plywood transom, what? If you can answer that and show us some photos, we might make some suggestions .....

It's not usually the 'repair' that is the problem, more the access to the area to work on it.

If you could post some photos, it would help to give meaningful advice. Put the photos in photobucket and post a link. (not easy I know!)

Thanks, should have mentioned that it's a grp hull with ply inside the hull. I'll have to remove the engine and drive, vinyl floor covering and see what we have.

Unfortunately the boat's not nearby as I'm working away, but will see what I can do.
Thanks

not as difficult as you may think but be prepared to get mucky, I will pm you a link to one where I replaced most of the transom.

What boat is it?
What drive is fitted?
Are you re-fitting this or converting to outboard or shaft?

It's a thing called a sangster coho 1800, locally built in Vancouver. basically a deep vee runabout with a mercruiser 140, alpha (?) drive I/O. I don't plan on repowering if I can help it, as I think it's a low hours engine and I don't want to sink money into it if possible. There are engine issues - overheating and no oil pressure info below 1800 rpm, so I'll seeing they can be fixed for relatively little money before I rip out the transom as it'll dictate the final solution/ design.
