Does anyone know a sourse of those gold letters that I think are transfers, which are used for name boards, honour boards etc- I need letters about 50mm high for SSR plate.

Got mine from funkymonkey. They are peel off letters. A bit hard to put on well - but look good when you have done it.

Trick is to use a 50:50 mix of fairy liquid & water to wipe the surface with before application.
Gives you plenty of time to slide it around and get position 100% nefore it dries.

Thanks for the suggestions. Just spoken to FunkeyMonkey, and they can cut me a self-adhesive stencil so I can paint my own lettering which will look best on my rather traditional boat.
