Trakmark Help Required Please

Hi,

Could someone help with the following:
I am buying a 70's broads cabin cruiser with Trakmark on the cabin roof which has been painted, in hand sized places the paint has peeled or chipped/rubbed
away so if I wanted to paint the roof again how would I prepare these areas? How would I remove all paint? paint stripper, sanding or would all the paint and Trakmark require removal some how?
The boat is ex hire and has been paint numerous times over the years.

There is a paint stripper for use on GRP called Dilunnett available from chandlers like Force Four. Not sure how it would work on another substrate, but good at removing paint on gelcoat. Beware the stuff stinks like a bad sewer.

I wouldnt use a paint stripper on trakmark as it is a plastic diamond pattern on a cloth backing and you will never regain the original pattern.. What substrate is it glued on to? Is it wood or grp? Some nonslip trackmark patterns were moulded into the grp structure.

Ok,,, thanks for the tip on stripper for GRP, the Trakmark is indeed on a GRP super structure, I haven't had the chance to see if it peels to see if it is moulded in or not but will look next week,, the thing is if a door frame had some paint chipped from it you couldn't just paint over it, you either strip all the paint or you fill the chipped areas then paint, so I guess I'd like to repair and paint rather than a total strip back and refurb, any ideas on this please?

Ok, try the grp stripper and when the paint is softened, scrape off with a pallet or stripping knife until you expose the tips of the diamond pattern. You will probably need multiple applications of the stripper. The hard work comes when trying to remove the paint in the grooves of the pattern - the corner of a stripping knife and a wire brush will be useful. Mask off around the edge of the non slip to avoid getting too much stripper on polished gelcoat - try using a good quality tape such as 3m blue tape. Dont use cheap paper tapes. Alternatively, you can machine sand the raised pattern off and paint the area with non slip deck paint. You can repaint with either Hempel or International Deck Paint (smooth or sanded non slip finish). If applying to smooth gelcoat, lightly sand with 240 grit to get adhesion and remove any remaining wax.
