Well my trailer still has a little bit of original if only the tow thingy. A bit knackered now I know. but does this make it OK. All the other bits are surely just mending. When can I get another towing bit??

Not that it's relevant to this thread, but it reminds me of many years ago when I worked for a pharmaceutical company and I was stopped by plod at 2.00am one Saturday morning.

"Is this your car sir?" "No" (Company car)
"What's in the boot" "Drugs"

Well, I wasn't in a hurry to get home! They weren't happy.

I'd love to be able to say that to a cop, just to see the look on their face. When I got stopped and the cop asked what was in the car, I nearly said 'four seats and a steering wheel', but I didn't have the bottle. Plus the cop looked like one of those grumpy gits.

My then boss was stopped once in his Lotus (Damn site better than my old Cortina)

"What's the registration number of this car sir?"

"Dunno officer. It's not my car, but if you look on that plate at the front you should find it. I think there's another one on the back as well."

Apparently plod was not amused.

Re: Trailer legalities. Warning, long post!

How about tempering this post a little, it is begining to frighten me.

I am planning to build my own unbraked trailer to bring up a 15 meter mast up from the south of England to the north of Scotland. A seven meter long trailer built on a new B&Q tiny chassis with supports for the mast and fair overhangs.
I have read the current regulations and it almost looks legal. Perhaps if I paint it all tarmac grey it won't be seen.
There will be a label as supplied with the original trailer which quotes weight limits and date of manufacture and there appears to be no limit in the length of the drawbar.

Re: Think about it

Well if I were you why not try asking if some one is sailing up there , or a return / part load on a lorry . To get contacts re lorry part loads, go to WH Smiths and ask for their trade magazine list look for hgv ones where in you'l find plenty of firms.

I dont think your mast carried on a small trailer will cope with the strains imposed I mean 45 foot , that is very long . Those cheap nasty little trailers will bounce all over the place !!!
Another option is to put the mast on a roof rack / back of a lorry, example a large 4x4 or a 7.5 flat back lorry on hire, the lorry option is the best one .With the mast set up over the cab and supported correctely through out it's length it should manage the run ok. Then tow a trailer behind to act as a safety barrier , so that most of the time there will be no over hang at the rear .

Re the draw bar length yes there is no limit on boat trailer draw bar ( so to speak ) but think about it the actual overal length is written so dont be fooled by people saying you can have any length of draw bar cos you will still get nicked as the trailer will be over the limit.

Also the trailer wont be carrying a boat so would be treated as a normal trailer .

Final thought
I have a large boat trailer built to max length which you could hire with certain conditions which are it needs two bushes on the front axle and two tyres after that a hefty deposit just incase you damage it or crash it .This is a heavy duty trailer that tows like a dream at high speeds !! hey it's a cheap option.

Pulled over by the Plod

You may remember the Frog Eyes - nice litle motor - well I had a Viva many years ago (yes - not quite in the same league) anyway I wanted to put Spotlights on it - Now my logic was if I can mount them as close as possible to my line of sight from the driving position then they would light up both near and far. So I went down our local plod station and photocopied the relevant page - height from ground, distance from edge of car, disatnce between centres etc and mounted them.

Well from the driving Seat you could see the whole of the light rising above the bonnet - hence the Frog Eye comment at the begining.

You can guess the rest :-
plod pulls me over
they are illiigal
get out book in metric
get out tape measure in imperial
thats when the fun began - errr how many whatists in a thingy .........
anyway two Jam sandwiches and 4 plods later they finally worked out it was legal by 1mm in each direction.

I could have told them that - but it's not the done thing IS IT .
