I have just changed cars and when i plugged the trailer board in the red lights came on normally but when i tried to indicate the red lights flashed but the orange indicators were dead. Any ideas where to start looking. Thanks. ps trailer board works perfectly when tried on another car.

Sounds like car socket is incorrectly wired, or at least wired differently to your previous car. Need to dismantle car socket, and test from earth to each individual pin with a test lamp or test meter while operating indicators , brake lights etc. to identify circuits and match to trailer board.

That will be the earth wire ( white ) , check that pin 3 is clean . Most of the time its on the inside , pin 3 is at the btm and the socket fills with water and the pins rust big time . I have to sort this problum out nearly every day and 9 out of 10 times its rust.

thanks for the replies everybody---wiring diagram is going to be useful ---will start looking at the earth and then the wiring----regards lenten

update---took car socket apart today and it looked grotty so bought new one --£3 .20 +30p for 3 brass bolts (had to hacksaw the old rusty steel bolts off) ----will fit at weekend---let you know how i get on

Can I offer a quick tip to enyone who fits their own towing electrics I have fitted my own towbars for the last 20 years with the help of a very practical friend.. First time round he suggested that we loop a couple of feet of the 7 core in the boot of the car before attaching the socket, we have done that ever since. On two cars when having to renew a faulty socket, its easy just to pull a bit of extra cable through and strip back the insulation to start again.

A new socket should do it . You will find the pin numbers next to the pin on any new socket , if not they will be on the lift up lid.
pin 1 = yellow
pin 2 = blue
pin 3 = white
pin 4 = green
pin 5 = brown
pin 6 = red
pin 7 = black

If it does not work , see were the white wire goes in the car if it is connected to the car loom move it to the body at a clean earth point.

According to my book

pin 1 (L) = yellow, L hand indicator
pin 2 (54G) = blue, Rear fog
pin 3 (31) = white, Earth
pin 4 (R) = green, R hand indicator
pin 5 (58R) = brown, R hand tail
pin 6 (54) = red, Stop lights
pin 7 (58L) = black, L hand tail & number plate

thats what i said , not all sockets have the l , 54 etc marks on them but they all have the numbers . I was just keeping it simple you dont need to know what the wires do at the socket just were they go.

SO WHAT> i have posted the full info. If you dont need to know it it DONT READ it

My socket has only the (ISO ??) reference numbers marked on it so the numbers 1 to 7 would not be very helpful to anyone with a socket like that

Also it is useful to know which wire does what when it come to truouble shooting.

I am terribly sorry if you find the extra info so confusing.
I thought others might find it useful
