I have just bought my son a jetski (i know,i know), But he is RYA level 2 Powerboat. The trailer is on Indispension units using taper bearings in the hubs, they are new ones but there is quite a lot of play, how do i adjust them? I seem to remember that you are supposed to tighten them fully and back them off a quarter turn before securing with the castleated nut. Any pointers greatfully recieved.

I do them up until any play just disappears, new bearings may need checking after a hundred miles or so. Grief, this was on Beetles a long time ago...

Had a lot of experience with trailer bearings over some 12 years towing motor bikes and boats. That told me the following.

IMHO. There MUST be a bit of play with tapered roller bearings, otherwise they will break up. Standard practise should be support the wheel on a jack, tighten up hard by HAND, no spanners, then come back one notch(usually a castellated nut) Fit splitpin. There should be a perceptable bit of play at the wheel rim, if going clonk clonk, its too loose, if no play it's too tight. Grease after every dunking in salt water.

If you do a lot of miles keep a set of bearings in your tool kit. It is better to change a set in event of failure, rather than having a trip completely wrecked.

Sorry, only if you like changing bearings every few 100 miles or so. There must be some play in taper roller bearings else they break up when they heat up and expand. When fitting new tighten them with a spanner or socket by hand to set them then release the nut and tighten with your fingers as tight as you can then back off one flat and fit split pin. I would also pack with water resistant grease to avoid repacking after each dunking.
