Tragic deaths at Port Hamble Marina

sorry, stupid Q, how did the exhaust fumes got in the fully enclosed canopy?
not very familiar with outdrive setups, but must be an issue with exhaust elbows or whatnot?

All canopies have gaps around the edges … they aren’t sealed.

I would imagine a slight breeze towards the boat from astern caused the awful result.
That will be it.
And unfortunately not the first time
Much less risk with diesels although there is always risk of fumes could come from a neighbouring boat or a portable generator for example.

The report suggests the positioning of the Ringo on the stern diverted fumes from the surface above the outdrive to under the canopy lip.
See many a tender in this position on smallish boats.

'Much less risk with diesels'

why is that ? physical design of the machinery or less CO with buring diesel ?
Diesels don't generate much CO, you'd choke on the other stinky fumes generated long before succumbing.
I have 4 on board. But I don’t (yet) have one in the cockpit.

Unless you sit in the cockpit with the hatch shut the ones in the saloon etc will go off well before a dangerous concentration is reached.

Whatever. The report made me decide to spend a tenner rather than knowing better. If it’s a tenner wasted I don’t care.

I have 3 CO alarms on the boat.
One in each cabin and one in the saloon,

I am obliged to have at least one CO alarm under the boat safety scheme (BSS) which applies to boats on inland waterways
The BSS is mostly not fit for purpose but this requirement introduced only as recently as in 2019 is a good one.

Eberspacher.
Petrol boat next door.
Complacency……
2 or 3 years ago i was working on a boat when the CO alarm went off (fortunately i'd recently fitted alarms to this boat), but nothing was running, no engines, genset etc. The boat next door had a petrol genny running on deck and the breeze was blowing exhaust fumes into the boat i was on.

I believe the CO from a petrol engine exhaust is about 30 times greater than petrol but don't quote me on that.
Why that is so I don't know.
But CO is produced by anything that is burned.
