Tragic accident

This terrible accident just doesn't make sense.

Local news is reporting that after going aground, and transmitting a mayday, the skipper got into the water to try and find deeper water...

I don't understand why he left the boat to start with, as surely if the water was low enough for him to get in, then there was no chance of it refloating imminently, and surely GPS would have shown the best way out.... looking at the pictures on the news it was a fairly modern boat, so surely GPS equipped?.... or alternatively, if the water was deep enough to potentially refloat her (perhaps with heeling her over), then how on earth did it fall on him?

I can only assume that it was starting to re-float, and he got in to find which way got deeper, which seems to me a particularly dangerous, and sadly in this case fatal, thing to do....as it maybe sailed onto him.

It will be salutory reading when a report is enevitably finally produced.

My condolences to the family.

I have heard of dinghy sailors, getting in to pull the boat and a wave lifting the boat from one heel over the apex to the other and injuring them..........
Poor soul.................. and witnessed by his son...

We saw that one - it's not the tragedy one. When we saw the beached one, it had people around it as if it had been beached deliberately for cleaning.

News reports of boating accidents seem to allways have inacuracies ,Possibly he was walking out a kedge anchor into deeper water ready for the tide returning. Without the full facts its hard to say.
Accidental grounding is usually a frightening experience unless its in soft mud.

Most news reports have the most appalling inaccuracies and/or omissions. You tend only to notice when you know something about the subject.

latest RNLI report that the skipper went over the side to try & push his 35' off the bank, was attached to vessel by rope to avoid being swept away and rope went around the prop, engine was in gear! and he was pulled into the prop suffering significant damage, further damage done by the yacht crushing him as she rose & fell in the swell...Not a nice scenario!
