Hi All,
I am considering moving my boat to Haslar for next season but the road infrastructure from the motorway doesn't seem all that great.
Does anyone know how long it typically takes to get from the motorway to the marina on a friday night and then back again on a sunday - and thats in the car and not the boat before anyone helpfully suggests otherwise /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

cheers,
Ben

I travel from Haywards Heath to Haslar on a regular basis ( end up coming in on the M27 ). My father-in-law lives in the area and has advised me to avoid going through Gosport to get to Haslar because of the traffic. I go via Fareham then Lee-on-Solent then Alverstoke. It may seem much longer on a map but it avoids the bottlenecks and is therefore much quicker. CAVEAT : Nice summer days can cause queues in Lee-on-Solent , then you're shafted whichever way you go !

Hi
It depends what you mean by Friday night. During the rushhour it could easily take an hour - solid all the way from the motorway. Later it is not good but bearable. Sunday evenings are not usually too bad for the return journey. That road is never good - 19 unsynchronised traffic lights between Fareham and Gosport - so if one dont get you the other 18 will.

The road from the M27 to Haslar is pretty horrible, and there is no easy way round it, probably about 35 minutes at least. Once you get there, it can be quite a walk from the car to the boat, depending upon where your mooring is. Facilities are good (in line with the high prices) but no storage ashore during the winter. More choice in Chichester, but you've got to cope with the tides.
Regards

Ben,

Have now had my boat at Hasler for over 2 years and travel to the boat most weekends all year round from Jct 6 of the M25, A3, M27 etc. so not sure if this helps any. I have done it in 50 mins very early in the morning with no traffic and at the other end of the scale if Hindhead (which is my major blockage) gets backed up it had taken 2 hours. From now till easter, traffic is easy, once summer kicks in I always travel either early or very late. never understand the point of getting back to the pontoon by 4.00 pm so that I can then sit in traffic for hours on end. On average I would say an hour and fifteen minutes is about right. Once off the M27 the final bit through Fareham to Gosport although not a quick piece of road does tend to move OK and takes about 20 mins. Bottom line, when you get to Hasler you get the real benefit, which is that in no time at all you can be out on the water and in the Solent. have done the sums, looked at all the options and still think Hasler can't be beat, especially if like me you sail all year round and want maximum water time. I can cover ground quicker by car than by boat, Chichester/Port Solent et al just don't cut it for me, also no waiting on sills/tides etc. 24/7 access and sailing. Good luck.

We berth at Haslar and travel just about every Friday from Haslemere in Surrey - down the A3, across on M27 and then down the A32. We travel at peak time as we have to wait until the kids are out of school and it takes about an hour door to door.

From the M27 / A32 jcn to Haslar we average about 35 mins. Seems like a long time but not when you factor in that from Haslar youre in the Solent in under 5 mins of casting off.

We too ummed and arhed about the journey but have generally found Haslar a great place to berth and well worth the 35mins from the M27. Friendly and helpful staff, good genneral atmosphere, the Light Ship for beers and a decent Bistro up by the car park if you fancy splashing out on some proper food and best of all... out to sea in minutes!

Apart from the time some prat parked on his roof on the main road, it's always a lot quicker by car than by boat from Fareham. Off peak, from the M27, it's probably as quick to get out into the Solent as from Port Solent, definitely if there's a queue to lock out.

I'm surprised at the length of time quoted by some people. I have been at Haslar for three seasons and I would say that I average about 15/20 mins from M27 to Haslar car park. The weekday rush hours are by far the worst time, but since I work in London and travel down from Surrey, I rarely hit the Friday rush hour. Sunday evenings don't have a rush hour in my opinion, especially when you compare to Hindhead, Guildford and M25 in Surrey.

The biggest issue I've had with Haslar is when the car park gets too full to park. Happens on about 3/4 weekends a year.

Agree with your comments about car park. Lots of people not supposed to park this side of barrier press the button and claim to be going to Landers. Once in on one bothers. I complained this year and was told that a new (i.e more expensive) system was to be introduced this winter. They werent sure how it would work tho. Apart from that it is a good place to be tho lift out and storage would make it better still
We should have a Haslar meet in the MM one evening?

I would be up for a Haslar meet. In another thread there is the possibility of a meet at Gunwharf Quays that a number of Haslar people have expressed an interest in.
