Trade In or Re-Power

I really like my Sunfury, but it has twin petrols (Volvo Penta 151's) so I am thinking of re-powering with twin diesels (rest of the boat is in top notch condition), but, for the same as the re-power would cost, I could trade in the Sunfury for something that already has twin diesels (Have seen Sealine 290 with twin doesels 45k ish, Falcon 27 same). Dealers reckons 20k+ trade in against Sealine, so net cost about the same as new engines. However, if I went for re-power the engines would be brand new wouldn't they whereas trading in would give me older engines - ummm - am dithering - what does anyone think?

Unless you are really attached to the sunfury personally I would have a change and trade in.

But would your Sunfury be worth £45k when you come to sell her even with newish engines? Probably not. Its only ever going to be worth the top end of the existing Sunfury price range IMHO whereas the S290 is still going to be worth near what you paid for it
I only think its worth repowering with new engines if you really like the boat and want to keep her for a long time. Maybe worth considering recon or secondhand engines to keep the cost down

Got a fairline Weekend, re-powered with kad32 last year. I love the boat and have no intention of getting rid of her in the near future. I agree with others, she will only be worth top Weekend range when I do sell, but I know the boat and she is now in very good condition. The biggest plus for me was having new mechanics, rather than engines that are 5-10 years old. She now has nearly 300hours on the clock since last July, so im getting my moneys worth!!!

I am always upgrading/modifying things, so a repower was ideal for me as I wanted to make the boat my own.

Yes, this is the correct advice imho. An aftermarket diesel will not be worth as much an original BUT Deleted User is a bit heartless, and forgetting that the dear lickle boat might have specially knitted fenders etc. In which case , nickem and make sure you unload everything else you need at another marina from the dealer before the trade-in ....

last year My 28 ft sunseeker had two 260 hp mercruser pet's, £80 per hour plus up keep.I tried to sell it but no one wanted it. I got a pair of new kad32 dp's. installed for £22k including everything except the fuel tank which was like new. Best money I have ever spent, less than £8 per hour averaging 25 knots. bla bla bla . just do it and don't listen to those trying to sell you convertions using your old gears etc. don't wait cos when you make the move you will tell yourself you should have done it years ago.

I've just re-engined my Fairline Sprint with a diesel - Yamaha 165hp 370 STI. I've posted enough on here about it, so PM me if you want to know more. I have a grin from ear to ear/forums/images/icons/smile.gif. As have the others who have reengined their pride and joys. I've just come back from a day around the Solent did 56 nm - used 1/4 tank - cost SFA!
