Can anyone give me examples of boatyards moving boats a short distance on public roads.

I know Seaward Marine use one in the Isle of Wight and I have seen them in Europe

Such as the ones below.

I know they do it with local dispensation form in the UK I assume the County Council?

The trailer builders name in Knijpstra now called Roodberg

I cant think of any UK examples, but I can think of some overseas. They do it at Baie des Anges marina near Antibes, South of France and they do it at the Riva dealership in Monaco - to get from the crane/hoist to the yard/workshop they have to cross and travel some metres along a public road. Also they do it at the Delta Yachts factory in Estonia.
I have never noticed whether they have number plates and other road-use legal formalities

A company in York regularly move boats about 1/2 a mile (maybe more) with a tractor & hydraulic trailer google Acaster marine & you will see how far from the river they are

why do you ask?

In the UK, they will need a Vehicle Special Order, to use a special purpose vehicle such as this in the UK. There is a formal process to get one of these through the DfT. The process will be similar in other Eu countries, but will depend on their appetite for enforcement.

Beaurocrats in Guernsey have introduced legislation that means many boatowners have found themselves Hi and Dry.
Unable to use trailers of certain specifications, and drivers without extra categories on their licences.to move boats from storage areas to the water

I was very lucky I had my boat together with escort taken to the QE2 marina at 10 30 on the 15th April
By 5 00 pm I think that day all boat moving stopped..

There are some very unhappy owners..

Abersoch Land & Sea cross the main road from their yard to the beach when launching boats up to about 30' I guess but mainly on the boats own road trailer with their 4 x 4 tractors.

The laws on trailers and towing in Guernsey make little sense anyway.
Today whilst travelling behind a 20ft trailer off the permitted harbour route loaded with sacks of aggregate that over hung by at least a foot each side therefore exceeding the 2. 31m max allowed.
We were met with an empty 40 ft flat with escort towed by a vehicle, of the max permitted on the container route. 2. 50 m.
The trailer I was following was breaking the law, and the special constable doing the escort did nt seem even to notice or care.
I could in effect launch my own boat, provided the complete rig is nt longer than 40 ft . the trailer is braked, and the towing vehicle is half the all up weight of the trailer and boat combined. Oh and I apply to use a flashing orange light.
What difference that makes who knows.
I know of a couple of hauliers who have had to reduce the width of vehicles, whilst others don t.
If you have an English car licence and tranfer to a Guernsey licence, even though it is a car licence you are allowed to drive a different selection of vehicles, to the Guernseyman who took his test in Guernsey.
The level playing field does nt exist..
Stupid thing is. You could crane your 40 ft Aqua Star Sunseeker Trader , on a cradle, onto a 40ft flat bed container truck.
Book an escort, and drive it to the harbour.
It could be over weight over height over width, and most importantly not on a trailer designed for boat transport...
Which just shows how stupid the whole thing is..
The Board of Administration are already on a merrygoround, by the looks of it Bandit !

Thanks for your replies guys its instances of the use of the trailers on the public road I am interested in.

As well as Roodberg boat handling equipment they also make Mondial fair ground rides, a very interesting company.

Why do you ask? if you are looking for precedents for a fight with authorities then you could drop lots of businesses in it who have been "getting away with it" for years

it would be a shame if helpfully minded forum members inadvertently did boat yards harm

I think a little more info is required

Yes i am looking to enlighten the authorities in Guernsey to what happens in the UK and Europe as a whole, this is highly unlikely to cause any ripples or problems in the UK for anyone.

Guernsey in their wisdom "Guernseyfied" a bit of UK Legislation without thinking through that they were considering Highway legislation covering dual carriageways and motorways.

What I am trying to demonstrate is that there are many exceptions where local authorities both in the UK and in Europe take a pragmatic view of the legislation, the equipment in use , the local situation and the speed of movement to grant a dispensation for running short distances on suitable roads between a launching point or hoist and a storage yard say a mile or two down the road or even on occasions around a harbour.

There are many examples I have seen but its always good amunition to have some more.
