They had a thing about Trackers on the box the other week. Showed the rozzers flying over the capital of Nigeria in a helicopter. They were picking up dozens of tracker signals but reckoned it wasn't worth the effort of finding the cars.

Used to work for Global Telematics, a company set up by Racal to develop and sell vehicle tracking and management systems.

Tracking devices tend to fall into 2 categories:

1. Devices like Tracker which send out a radio signal that requires a police car or chopper with specially installed equipment to actively search for the missing car.

2. A true Telematic device that contains both a GSM based data link and a GPS device for location.

Type 2 is obviously far superior as the car owner via a piece of software on their laptop/PC can log on and view where the vehicle is, how fast it's going etc, etc and view historical data, ie where it has been since it went missing. It also allows ring-fencing so when you go to bed, you draw a line round the car on the map and if it goes outside the fence you are alerted and can tell the police exactly where it is going.

Neither type is effective once in a container but type 2 will show you it's history until it got to the container or lock-up so tracking is easier. It also has it's own power supply and is installed covertly so the thief does not know it has one.

I generally sold packages to fleet users to spy on their staff which invariably resulted in some sackings and on several occasions the MD's of companies would order an extra unit which was fitted to their wifes car next time it was serviced. This resulted in at least 2 divorces!!!!!! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
