Towing your boat

[ QUOTE ]
I need it for summer only, will sell in winter so do not want to lose too much.

So you only want it till the end of the week then ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, you can't beat a Range Rover. Heavy enough to give plenty of traction (provided you have the correct tyres ) and powerful enough to pull most things. Love mine, but with a 3.9L V8 Petrol engine in it, can't afford to run it until I convert it to gas.

Get yourself on eBay:-

blew your 3 gib budget, but only by a couple of hundred. Rebuilt on a galvanized chassis, engine and gearbox from late 90s, bl**dy good fun (c:

We used to tow our Fletcher 16 behind an auto renault scenic with 4 up, and it worked OK. Always managed to dump the boat in and get it out with out any trouble.

We once did get stuck in the lakes, at the south lakeside hotel, when the scenic couldnt get a grip on the gravel going up the slope towing out the boat.

We called the AA, and forgot to mention there was a boat involved when we said the car was stuck, and out they came. It was an amusing sight watching the AA van towing my Scenic plus the boat attached to the back up the slope with no problems at all. They never even bothered to detach the boat.

Anyway the Scenic happily towed the boat for a year before we changed it for a Honda 4wd.

Last night on BBC 1 there was one of those police reality programmes.

One plod stopped two women, (travellers) one towing a stolen caravan and the other a burger bar. The one towing the burger bar had a full licence but was not qualified to tow a trailer.

This had me pulling out my licence and checking it against the DVLA site. Seems I can tow a trailer, but what sort of full licence disallows this? The car was a standard 4x4 and the trailer was just a small burger bar.

The lady towing the stolen caravan, wasn't charged with any offence.......

There is a Landy County long wheelbase with a V8 for sale behind a house in a car park in Ulverston for £2250.
It's been for sale for ages. Reckon it'd go for half that now.

Think you'll find it all comes down to how old the license is. May be wrong but I think the older license like ours used to allow towing automatically but the newer ones have it as some sort of seperate test. Could be wrong, it has been known.

P.S. Lakie, guilty here too /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I told you about one in Ulverston. Looks the same as that, but 5 door.

Mind you, probably about £200 in fuel to get down south. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Agree with everyone saying Range Rover. I bought mine a year ago as my daily car after we discovered SWMBO's X3 wasn't man enough for the job of towing our boat, found an X plate 4.6 with 25k on the clock and have done 22k nearly fault free miles in it since. For towing our boat it's just superb, rock steady and fussfree. Given that ours is just over 2000kgs all up it limited the choice to be fair and I just couldn't resist the "driving a country house" appeal of the Rangey. Slip ramps are a doddle, never even need to go above tickover to pull the boat out.

It's only had 2 problems, one was a blown rad hose which is just wear and tear as far as I'm concerned, the other a leaky air spring which cost me bugger all to change although I did have to take it ot LR to have the height sensors reset afterwards. Local Landy dealer has been OK, they're clearly service orientated and used to them having problems. I'd have another Rangey without doubt and given the way Sports are depreciating these days it wont be long before I can afford one !!

Hugh,

I would be careful if i were you. The last person to spend an hour with Will Carling was unfortunately killed in a road accident...so maybe check over your shoulder every few mins /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I use a Kia Sorento to tow my boat, but have found the dealership is useless in fixing all the problems. Now it is out of warranty, they just don't want to know and I still have the issues I had when I first bought the car three years ago.

Can you recommend a decent 4x4 that is not too expensive and has dealers who give a damn? My boat is 1.5 tonne 22 footer.

Mitsubishi L200. New style a bit poncey but old ones brilliant.

Dan - ask Mitsi (Colt Car Company) to sponsor instead of Kia. It'll give you credibility and they'll jump at the chance. PM me if you want some contacts.
