So having decided to take the boat up to Largs

Suggested route to Largs from M6/A74?

Boat & Trailer 2.25 Tonnes max towable width. Car Isuzu Trooper 3.0L . Me fairly experienced at towing on reasonable roads. Don't want country lanes.

I am tempted to take A76 Dumfries Kilmarnock is it a reasonable A road without too many steep hills and a reasonable number of lay bys or passing places?

Best route - stay on the motorway to Glasgow then A737 south to Largs. It is slightly further but probably quicker and certainly easier towing.

Don't take A76 Dumfries to Kilmarnock. stay on M74 all the way to junction 8 Stonehouse. It is slightly longer but is a much better road especially for towing, take A71 to Kilmarnock its about 25 miles of fairly good A road then duel carriageway till you meet the A78 head north, duel carriageway all the way by passing Irvine/Kilwinning/Stevenston/Saltcoats and Ardrossan then you only have about 10 miles to Largs. You will enjoy the Clyde, It will be worth it especially with the weather forecast for this weekend.

That would be the route I would use if it was me.

I live near M74 Jnct. 6 but prefer to go the "other" road to Largs. Continue on to junction 5 Raith and take the A725 Eastkilbride then head for the GSO (Glasgow South Orbital) to the junction with the A77 @ Haggs, turn left follow signs for kilmarnock and pick up the A78 for Largs. This is all new(ish)dual carriageway and will take approx. an hour to do from the M74. PM me if you need more info.

Clyde.
