it's quite normal for 2 expensive police cars to escort people with trailers to a weighbridge...
In my former business I had vehicles going on weighbridges every day and checking weights became second nature. AFTER 1 incident where one of my vehicles was overloaded by 300 kilos and the Police would not allow the vehicle to continue without another vehicle turning up to remove the 300 kilos overload. And despite removing the 300 kilos both my driver and myself were fined and my fine was £750 and my driver £600. I check everything.
So when I bought a boat from a Boat Yard I asked them to supply a new trailer to suit the boat. Anyway after I got it home I thought that the tyres bulged a bit, so I took it to a weighbridge and weighed them and the combined weight was 400 kilos over what the boat trailer was legally allowed to tow.
So unless you are certain that you are within the weight limits of what you are towing you should find out where your nearest weighbridge is. get the boat weighed, pay your £5 and if you are stopped, you show them your weight ticket and they allow you to carry on. Being taken to a weigh bridge can easily put a hour on your towing journey time.
