Towing from Cheshire to Southampton

it's quite normal for 2 expensive police cars to escort people with trailers to a weighbridge...

In my former business I had vehicles going on weighbridges every day and checking weights became second nature. AFTER 1 incident where one of my vehicles was overloaded by 300 kilos and the Police would not allow the vehicle to continue without another vehicle turning up to remove the 300 kilos overload. And despite removing the 300 kilos both my driver and myself were fined and my fine was £750 and my driver £600. I check everything.
So when I bought a boat from a Boat Yard I asked them to supply a new trailer to suit the boat. Anyway after I got it home I thought that the tyres bulged a bit, so I took it to a weighbridge and weighed them and the combined weight was 400 kilos over what the boat trailer was legally allowed to tow.
So unless you are certain that you are within the weight limits of what you are towing you should find out where your nearest weighbridge is. get the boat weighed, pay your £5 and if you are stopped, you show them your weight ticket and they allow you to carry on. Being taken to a weigh bridge can easily put a hour on your towing journey time.

Another possibility would be to get some instruction in the arcane art of sailing (not actually as hard as all that - take corners a bit wider, (at Lands End) don't expect fast starts or stops and stay out of the 3rd lane on the TSS). :D

Impala? Lightweight outboard powered racer? Sure it could be done but its not ideal and from my experience its a job that most delivery companies would not take on for that reason. I round Lands End at least 4 times every season and in a cruising 36 footer I still take care to time it to suit the weather

I think you'll find the boat herself starts at 1950 KG, not LBs, ie 4290 lbs, even worse.

A lot of boat to tow, wide too; in fact I think the width needs checking, seem to remember my boat at 7'7" beam wasn't that far below the limit, or one starts talking about - and paying for - police escorts ???

You can tow up to 4.1 metres wide without escort, 4.6 metres on motorways, but must give police two days notice. It can now be carried out in one operation on the ESDAL site, need additional strobe light and front and rear wide load boards
